PROBLEM WITH SETTING UP NEW SOFTWARE

HI, I AM A NEWBIE. I SPENT 4 HOURS DOWNLOADING THE STAR OFFICE 5.1 AND NOW I CAN'T GET IT TO INSTALL. THIS IS THE MESSAGE I GET. " KFM ERROR": COULD NOT LIST DIRECTORY CONTENTS. FOR>FILE:/ROOT/STAR OFFICE 5.1/SO51A_LNX_01.TAR:50%20SO51INST/. IT IS QUITE FRUSTRATING AFTER SPENDING 4 HOURS DOWNLOADING SOMETHING AND THEN NOT KNOWING WHAT TO DO WITH IT. IT "UNTARRED" JUST FINE AND THERE WERE NUMEROUS FOLDERS IN  THE FOLDER I CREATED IN THE HOME DIRECTORY FOR IT. THEY JUST WON'T OPEN. SO I HAVE NO IDEA WHICH ONE IS THE ONE THAT I'M SUPPOSED TO CHOOSE TO BEGIN THE INSTALLING PROCESS. THEY ALL SAY INSTALL. AND WHEN I CLICK ON ANY OF THEM THEY ALL GIVE THE SAME ERROR MESSAGE. PLEASE HELP, OR AT LEAST DIRECT ME SOMEWHERE WHERE I CAN BE ASSISTED. I AM TRYING TO LEARN BUT NOTHING IS MAKING ANY SENSE. YES I AM A WINDOWS USER. THANK YOU. RICHARD : )~

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

In the root folder created by the tar command, there should be a file called configure.  If so, run the following comands (as root):

../configure
make
make install

This should install it for you.

Also, there should be a file in that same directory called README or README.INSTALL.  Read it.  It will have step by stem instructions.

I had downloaded the software and I had the same problems.
Here is how I got it to install.
Put the files in the user home directory. Have the user(you) login as user.  Change to the directory that has the install script in it.  Run the install script.  You may have to execute it like this ./install. That software package will not run the install script if it is run by root! If it cannot run the script, try just typing install from the install directory.  See if this gets it going.
