..."mail.box" error message

There are two users who keep getting the following error message:

"The Object Store that is used by this note was not found or is not a Notes database: Mail.box"

This message appears on one of the users PC when she tries to send a Word attachment to an internet address.  The other user's problem is that he can open an attachment that was sent to him on the same day but if he tries to open it after a couple of days, he gets the error message.

Please help!

Are you using Shared mail?  What version of Notes?

zdimaAuthor Commented:
Yes, we are using shared mail and our server is running version R5.02.  One of the users is on version R5.02a and the other one is running R5.01.

I don't suppose there is any chance of you migrating away from Shared Mail?  I'm pretty sure that's your problem, but I've never actually used Shared Mail so I don't think I can pinpoint the problem any closer for you.  Sounds like there's something screwed up about the shared mail location or something along those lines.

What notes version?
This user who send the attachment can she sends a different type of attachment, or only word docs get stuck?
Is the shared mail being purged daily?  For some reason this email that the user can see in the morning but not the next day, is being purged from the shared mail database I think during the object collect task (which runs daily at night).  Send an email with attachment to several users including the user with the problem, and see what happens, I think then he will be able to see it the next day and so all the other users.

We are on Version R5.02.  It's not just Word docs, it's any attachment.  Our problem has gotten worse.  No one in the company can send an attachment now unless they save the new memo as a draft and then send it from there.  The shared mail is not being purged daily.  So many problems started since we migrated from one server running R4.5 to another server running R5.02.  This is one of the major issues.

Did the problem start when u upgraded to 5.0.2 from 5.0.1b???
I think today Lotus released the new QMU, R5.0.2b, I believe they might have done some fixes to the SCOS (another name for shared mail - Single Copy Object Store).  According to Lotus some bugs were discovered in R5.0.2 that didnt exist in earlier updates like 5.0.1 (a regression bug)
Check here for the QMU and bug fixes:

Thanks Gus, we will look into that. I think we will eventually steer away from shared mail.

zdima,

When you upgraded from R4 to R5 did you compact the SCOS.  If you did, then this might be the root of your problem.

When a Single Copy Object Store (SCOS) is compacted in Domino R5, the SCOS no longer has the bit set that tells the Domino server that it is a SCOS. Additionally, all the shared mail is not recognized as SCOS anymore. It does not matter if Compact is run with the "-r" switch to prevent the database from being converted to an R5 database -- it will still be adversely affected.

Although this was supposed to be fixed in R5.0.1 (or should I say Lotus addressed it in R5.0.1).  I believe there is a good chance that this is your problem.

*** Excerpt from the Lotus Notes and Lotus Domino Release 5.0a QMU and 5.0.1 QMR fix list:

SPR# DKEY46APTZ - Prevent a SCOS database from being damaged (losing its designation as the single copy object store) during compact. If you have a database which has been already damaged, please call Notes Support Services or go to www.support.lotus.com to obtain a tool to fix the database. [5.0a, 5.0.1] (see below)

For Domino 5.0 or 5.0a customers, if you have already run R5 Compact on your SCOS, use the appropriate platform-specific utility found in the document titled "Utilities to Fix Single Copy Object Store (SCOS) that Has Been Compacted Using Domino R5" (#21134) to reset the bit. Instructions for running the utility are included in the document.   http://support.lotus.com/sims2/sims_or2.nsf/6068fc2ac33ba084852563d400542029/4115d0bfe5674640852567530064022f?OpenDocument

To avoid the problem, do not run R5 Compact on your SCOS database, even though Lotus' upgrade instructions specifically recommend running Compact before bringing up an R5 server.

Thanks all for your help on this problem.  We eventually got a consultant to come in and fix the problem.  Don't know exactly what he did but he turned off shared mail and it fixed our problem.  Whenever we get an error message now relating to shared mail, we just run the "Load Object Collect" command on their mail file.

ghassan99Commented:
Load object collect is usually a timed task that runs at night.  I guess Pentapod got it right then, she said in the beginning that u should avoid shared mail.  And I really think its not that important anymore, coz harddisk space is very cheap now.

Your right Gus, Object Collector is a mail task that runs once a day and is usually entered in the NOTES.INI on the ServerTasksAt1= line.  Its job is to clean out messages that no longer have any links; in other words, its role is like that of a trash collector.

This problem is (was) directly related to running the compact task on the SCOS during the upgrade, and it is (was) fixable.

ZDima,

Instead of running LOAD OBJECT COLLECT on each persons mail file why not run it against the directory?

SYNTAX:  LOAD OBJECT COLLECT [mail file or directory]

This is similar to running OBJECT COLLECT -FORCE on a shared mail database.  All links are verified, so any message header containing a link to an inaccessible message body in a shared mail database will be purged.  Affected message headers will generally show the following error when users try to read them:

"The Object Store Note That Is Used by This Note Was Not Found.  Run the Object Store COLLECT Task on This Database."

St. Harris,

Hi, thanks for the comment.  Actually, we have already done that in the past yet some users still get the Object Store error message hence we started doing it on individual mail files that had problems.  We haven't had any problems for a while now so I think everything is okay.

So how does this work?  How do I close this question?

Just delete the question...

Or you could accept one of these comments as an answer.  This would be good information for the KBase regarding SCOS.
