cgi extension

I have been learning Perl/cgi scripting. I have an NT server running IIS and I have no problem running perl scripts that are called by an HTML doc. My question is when or do I need to use the .cgi extension on these scripts rather than .pl? If I change the name of a script form script.pl to script.cgi, what changes do I have to makd in IIS?
Thanks

You can use any extensions. You need to change the Application Extension Mapping.

IIS --> Web Site Properties --> Home Directory tab --> Application Settings Configuration... --> App Mappings tab.
