cgi extension

I have been learning Perl/cgi scripting. I have an NT server running IIS and I have no problem running perl scripts that are called by an HTML doc. My question is when or do I need to use the .cgi extension on these scripts rather than .pl? If I change the name of a script form to script.cgi, what changes do I have to makd in IIS?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

You can use any extensions. You need to change the Application Extension Mapping.

IIS --> Web Site Properties --> Home Directory tab --> Application Settings Configuration... --> App Mappings tab.
