Win 98 shutting down suddenly

Why is my pc shutting down by itself?
I have went into my power management and made sure that I do not have the settings on a time frame. Also opened up Microsoft Word and the screen went black and said that I was running dangerously low on system resources. I checked my system resources and it said that I have 88% free. I have also had trouble starting windows. Doesn't want to take my boot disk. Thought that I might have a virus that was undetectable by my virus scan, I went to McAfees web site and it said that one possible reason why your hard drive is constantly being read could possibly be a virus.

143 points, got it valued exactly don't ya?

anyway, I have seen this problem on some of the system manufactured by the company I work for.  It is caused by 2 things 50% of them time and bad motherboard the other though in other syatems could also be caused by a bad power supply.

1)  Modem flow control if occurs while online
     A)  in control panel, double click modems
     B)  in modem properties click connection
     C)  under connection, click advanced
     D)  now, make sure that the flow control is enabled for           software if it's a winmodem or hardware if not
     E)  Apply and exit
2)  PCI cards and PCI slot configuration
-- Try different combinations of cards in different slots
3)  Possible problem with motherbaord
4)  Possible problem with power supply, cable, surge protector,      wall power jack

Are you by chance overclocking??
Is the fan working on the CPU?
Wanting to eliminate an overheating problem, this could make it freeze or shut down.
ahhh, very true Rayt333, even if you're not overclocking, this is a possibility.  Verify the CPU fan is working properly/connected.

I don't know what is going on with my computer. It hasn't froze up or shut down in 2 days. I wish there was a way to split the points between you two. 1cell I did go through the steps at top for my flow control and made sure everything was correct. I also downloaded and ran the BCM diagnostics. Needless to say it didn't show that I had any problems. All the test passed. Although the hardware system health monitor device says that it is not working properly.
You can give the points to 1cell, if he is feeling generous then maybe he will split them up.

71.5 points for me, 71.5 points for Ray.  That's why you always offer even amounts of points.  hehe

paradisewaters,
if you would like to split the points, you can post other questions with proper point amounts for each.
OK, just hit submit and now I have the points, Ray, I'll post one for ya for 3 points, hehe
Thanks 1 cell
thank you, i just hope it was something we did that made it work
