On software it is the software that came with the machine from the company that built the machine. Like Dell,Compaq,Gateway.etc.

As opposed to Microsoft,Corel, etc. Some people make software for machines in general, OEM software is made for the manufacturer of the machine and isn't available to the general public. Any of that what you are looking for?

one more addition, does OEM differ in anyway to the softwear you buy in the shops?

MrbreezeCommented:
Yes OEM is specific to the machine it was made for. The software you buy in a shop is not, you can install it on any machine that meets the minimum system requirements written on the box. Hey that was three questions hehehe

Welllllll, if your referring to Windows 98 OEm versions as opposed to the full retail and upgrade versions, their is no difference in the actual operating system, and Mbreeze, the OEM versions are not either mnaufacturer or machine specific. When you purchase the OEM version you get a few more tools and specialized install disks that do not come with any other version.

Also OEM is (of cource) aplicable to hardware aswell, change the name on the product and you have an OEM version.

Like the Ericsson V.90 modem is just an OEM Multitech modem, just the color and logo differs. (and of cource Multitech is replaced by Ericsson in teh setup.inf and EEPROM)

"i know that it has something to do with lisencing software. OEM software is specific to the manufacturer it is issued for. All software has a License Agreement and the manufacturer of the machine is the party responsible for support concerning it. I was not attempting to give a complete treatise on the every aspect of the operation of the software nor to say that OEM software could not be run on a machine other than one biult by the manufacturer that issued the software.
OEM is Original Equipment Manufacturer and OEM software comes from the manufacturer of the machine the OEM software is lisensed to. You do not go to the store and buy OEM software, it comes with the machine when you buy it from the Original Equipment Manufacturer. Perhaps that clarifies what I said.
"When you purchase the OEM version you get a few more tools and specialized install disks that do not come with any other version."
That is specific

Not always, you can buy OEM software. Like AB-core for SAP R/3 is just an OEM version of ABman, with the addition of supporting the mill-mod. (and unless you work with sap r/3 in europe you prolly never have heard of either component)

SAP R/3 is probably the biggest ERP in the world. SAP is the 4th biggest software company in the world, but unless you work with it, you usually have never heard of it, world is strange sometimes :)
