Learning Visual Basic

I've learned most of my Access knowledge by purchasing the software and working w/it. I'd like to strenghten my VB knowledge (i'm a novice) through the same method. My question: Should I purchase VB6 software ? Will I gain enough understanding through a "hands on" approach. I understand this is all relative to my programming knowledge, skill level, etc... I'm just looking to start somewhere. I've used Access for 2 years and feel I've 'hit a wall'. I'd like to expand through a deeper understanding of SQL and VB. My main purpose is to strengthen my Access ability...suggestions ?
Thanks

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I would agree, my boss has always refused to send me on training courses for VB, but I am amassing a reasonable store of knowledge just by using it. I must also say that EE helps, the amount of tips and clues you can pick up from other questions let alone the ones you ask yourself is immense!

Are there several VB6 sofware packages, or is there just a specifice one. For example, w/Access you can get the database or developer software. I would just like the basic application for now...if that's all there is.

Also, can I learn VB as a 'stand alone' application by itself...or do I need Access or something to really utilize the software ??

You don't need access to do access database programs... There is something built into VB called JET that handles dealing with access databases.

The only thing I think you really need to start getting to grips with VB is a project, something that you are interested in with sufficient scope for you to have to explore the functionality available to you.

I guess what i'm asking is does the VB6 software contain developer tools such as forms, or some other objects to display the results of my VB code tests? ( Besides the module window ) What exactly does the software contain? For example, in Access you get queries, forms, tables, macros, modules....what does VB6 contain ?

mcriderCommented:
Yes, VB as tools to create forms... you use code to Build tables, queries, etc...  Then you can display the database results any way you want...
