lqc5800, first, are you using the number from SE for regular 98?

Also, are you getting the number from the Start Up manual or the certificate of authenticity>?

lgc, I presume that you are trying to install a new Second Edition over the evaluation version, correct.

To do so, boot to your Windows 98 Startup Disk and then run setup by typing D:\setup.

Note that when the startup disk boots it assigns a new letter to the cd rom drive. Use that letter in place of "D" above in my comment.

I did not have that problem. And I did upgrade from the trial ver. to the second edition. Seems to me like your using the wrong key.

lqc5800 are you upgrading from trial 98se to retail 98se or trial 98se to retail normal 98?

Lets now forget the that French version might be leaving a trace of its registration on the hard drive.  Also, you should not load the new (if it is an American version) onto the French version because the encryption technology for the US is not for export out of the US without permission.

Having said that.  I would try 2 things.

1. Make sure you are using the registered version key to install the registered version.  Otherwise, the key is not on the cd's database of acceptable installation keys.  However, contacting microsoft for installation support is free for the first 30 days or so of a registered version.

2. If you want to install a fresh copy, I would stronlgy suggest reformatting your hard drive with a dos or win startup disk.  Starting fresh is the best, because the reinstallation of a registered copy of win98 onto an eval will not be 100% clean. The eval will leave traces of itself on the drive.  This is why I never bay the UPGRADE version of an operating system.

sdland1, you have quite a resume, but your comments at this question bring your ethics into question. By posting the offer you have you could cause this site to become involved in a legal action that it doesn't deserve. Withdraw your offer and your proposed answer or I'll ask the site admin to remove your user name and logon.

With all respect...Dew_Associates you need to stop playing big brother on this site. My first day here you nailed me for locking a similar question when all I was trying to do was answer it.  All I am saying is that your input ON EVERY SINGLE attempt at a newer user to help someone is not giving everybody a good taste in there mouth.

And your comment about telling the site admin..come on we are all adults here.  This is not recess at the playground.

Anyways, The transfer of one license from a user to another use is a private transaction and does not breach the license agreement.  Your purchase of any commerical goods for private use are transferable as long as they are not illegal contraband.  Check your public laws and you will see.

r_horton, and with all due respect to you, baloney! If you had a clue about the legal community and and even the smallest insight into law, you would have realized how meaningless you comment was! The issue isn't about the public law, as you think you know it, and indeed you know nothing about it, it is about the enormity of the legal costs before you even see the inside of a court room. Most times it is those costs alone that destroy a good business, regardless of whether there was wrong doing or not.

Furthermore, I would suggest that you read the last two US Appelate Court decisions involving just this issue.

As for your big brother comment, my credentials, what I do and how I do it speak for themselves. If you spent the time it took you to post this mindless blather and reviewed the background of this site, its purpose and the people who have dedicated themselves to seeing it succeed, you just may learn something. It isn't a usenet, newsgroup or forum for mindless participation. This site is not a forum for this time of posting, now is it a site where alleged professionals "for the points 400 right" or as noted in another Q, "gimme the points".

You can join some pretty knowledgeable people here and help others or you can go play in the newsgroups, the choice, as always, remains your own!
