Games load very slowly!

I recently had to reinstall Windows 98 and Outlook 98 when my email went wrong. Now games such as Age of Empires take up to two or three minutes to go from the initial loading screen to the options screen - however once loaded they play perfectly well. Any suggestions as to what I have or have not done?

Nothing else changed?  Have you since updated DirectX and all the other fixes from WINDOWS UPDATE?  Did you reload and updated your graphics/video and sound drivers?  These are all important and impact your situation.

Age of Empires I recall reading as a problem in one of the Windows 98 TXT files; have you checked that out as well or fixes for the Game?  I'll check a bit more as well.

Noticed they had some patches/fixes and free upgrade(s) here as well.

Do you have a lot of harddisk activity during those 2 or 3 minutes?

How about virus protection or norton crashguard?? Seemed to really slow my system down, also check drivers for hdd controller.
Check for Microsoft Find Fast in start up on your start menu. Delete it if it is there as it takes up loads of system resources and doesn't do much.

Thank you for accepting my comments as the answer; and the "b" grade.  Therefore, I assume your situation is resolved.

I assume you've updated your Windows 98 system with fixes, directX updates, etc... using WindowsUpdate and the situation is improved.  Thought I'd share a few links that have helped us through time in understanding some of the Window 98 tools and resources that get in the way of performance now and then.

Best wishes.  If more is needed and the issues is quasi-resolved, please advise.
