Add a scanner lose a printer

I installed a Visioneer Scanner and now my printer does not work? I uninstalled every thing I could find that had to do with the scanner but no luck. I even reinstalled my printer drivers. I have a Canon BJC 250

What happens when you try to print?  What does the computer say/how does your computer respond.

Have you tried removing your printer drivers and then re-installing them?

I think what I would like to try next is try printing from a dos prompt.

Exit out of windows by restarting in MS/Dos mode.  Be sure to have your printer attached, turned on, and paper loaded.

once at the dos prompt, type the following

COPY CON LPT1           {press enter}
THIS IS A TEST ^L^Z   {^L & ^Z obtained by pressing CTRL+L & CTRL+Z}

This should make your printer print the text THIS IS A TEST on the top of a peice of paper.  The ^L tells your printer to do a form feed (pull a sheet of paper) and the ^Z is the end of file command.

Tell me if that works, if so, we can take it from there.

Hi
I got a write fault error writing device LPT1
Was the printer the ONLY device attached to your computers parallel port?

If so, it appears that there is a problem with your parallel port itself, your printer cable, or the printer.

What we have done with this simple test is determined that the problem exists at a hardware level and is NOT a problem with your windows software configuration.

What I would recommend is that you try a different printer cable, if that doesn't work then take your printer to a different computer and  try this same test.

If you have the same results then it looks like theres a problem with your printer.

Good luck.

OOPS, that last comment was from me, JRHelgeson
Someone else used this computer to login to EE, and when I... well I'm sure you can figure out what happened...

I understand your comment, but fail to see how this is an answer to his problem.

If you have a comment to add, POST IT AS A COMMENT.  If you have an answer, POST IT AS SUCH.

Once a user has exited from windows, and windows is no longer running - the system.ini and win.ini have no bearing or effect on the operation of programs executed from the dos prompt.

This is one trick that I learned and used quite often when I was providing printer technical support for users of WordPerfect for Windows.

No offence to you, my friend but I did not get to be resident expert in this category by guessing.

I do not know why it posted it as an answer I put it as a comment....

jr if this is true then why does the DRVWPPQT.VXD file affect dos test prints and why does Mustek driver files affect driver test prints ?

I really expected more professionalism from you then making a low blow towards inferring that I am guessing and that you are number 1   so what you are number 1 big deal.... sorry if I threatened your ego..... geesh just trying to help someone that needs help
You may want to try adding another printer port to the PC - I have found that several Canon printer models will not operate on an LPT print-thru system.

I can't tell you why this is - it just happens that way.  Canon printers usually print thru Canon scanners (although I've found problems with the NJC4200 and BJC4310SP).

A printer port card is a cheap and pretty well sure fire way of getting both devices to work properly.

eatranman,

Please do not be dissuaded from the comments or answers being posted to this question.  Having exited thoroughly from windows -- rebooting to a dos promt thoroughly excludes any and all drivers that have been loaded under windows.

This simple DOS "copy con" command sends data to the LPT1 port using nothing but the BIOS which is as close to hardware troubleshooting as you can get.

Please try the suggestions listed as I'm sure you'll find that it will narrow down the problem rather quickly.

Eatranman,
The problem is with the Visioneer it is loading comments in the win.ini and system.ini files which are capturing the port I doubt that it is a problem with the port itself.... especially if the scanner was still working up until you uninstalled it and tried to use the printer....

The dos print from my experience is not all that accurate when it comes to scanner driver files....

We can go about this one of two ways you tell me what operating system you have and I can try to help you find the visoneer files or... you e-mail me copies of your win.ini and system.ini I will mark what needs to be commented out and then e-mail them back to you my e-mail address is matrixportal@hotmail.com

Try going to start, find, files or folders then do a search on visioneer or the model of the scanner also hit ctrl, alt, delete and post everything you see in the background up here

did my solution work was it the visioneer drivers ?
