Trouble installing MSDE

After recently installing MSDE from the Office2000 CD (onto Win98 1st Edition), I was unable to log on, so I uninstalled the thing.

I then tried reinstalling it. It seemed to install OK, but during the autoconfiguration, the process hung. After a while, I ended the task, but found MSDE has not completed installation (MSDE did not appear in the task bar). I tried uninstalling, but Windows said that it didn't exist.

I then removed (what I thought was) all evidence of MSDE from the registry, & tried reinstalling, with the same result.

I don't want to reformat my hard disk, but I need MSDE.

Can anyone suggest how I can resolve this problem?

a possible cause is that MSDE requires some some network protocols. By default I think it required TCP/IP. Of course you can change this, but you'll have to write your own install script. However you will need a network no matter what you do.

So if you have standalone WIN98 without a network you can't install it - you must install some protocols and MS Loopback adapter for example to simulate network.

I'm pretty certain that MSDE does not require a network. It does require an IP stack, however, which I have.

I'm afraid I won't be able to check into this for a little while, so please bear with me for a few days. I was hoping to get this sorted out before I have to go into hospital for surgery. I ran out of time.

I will close this question when I get out in a few days. Thanks.

tchalkov,

Thanks for your proposed answer, but unfortunately I have to reject it.

Although MSDE does require a network protocol such as TCP/IP (which I have already installed), Microsoft say that it can be installed as a standalone Win98 app, & it does not require a network.

Since Microsoft have no idea why I can't install the thing, I'll just have to go ahead & format my hard disk.

Thanks anyway.

It is true that it can be installed on a standalone PC, but sometimes Network Protocols don't function properly without a network adapter. That is why there is a driver called MS Loopback adapter - this is a driver only which simulates a network. It is part of Windows so you can install it and try

tchalkov,

I'm sorry to have taken so long to get back to you, but my machine is still not functioning correctly, and I haven't been able to reinstall everything.

Notwithstanding, all the advice I've received from other sources seems to indicate your statement about the MS-Loopback adapter is correct, so thank you.
