ISA-PCI-DIMM

What are the ISA and PCI expansion slots for?  Does it matter what kind of RAM I buy as long as it is compatible?  How do I tell if I have an SCSI card?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I would recommend that you take you system in to a computer shop and get them to answer your questions. Without any background in hardware it is very easy to cause major problems (even with a background it is still easy).

Expansion slots (ISA, PCI, and others) are essentialy an interface boards such as modems, scsi controllers, etc... One is not compatible with the other. In other words, you can't plug an ISA board into a PCI slot.
As for ram, the key word is compatibility. You need to know if your system uses dimms or simms, bus speed, partiy requirements (if any), etc... You should start by looking in your motherboard manual, if you have one.
Finally, I have to agree with TedSenn, if you don't know how to determine if you have a scsi controller, and don't know anything about pc bus architectures, then you really should take it to a professional.
