how to record wav files from cassette tapes

Does anyone know how(or at least point me in the right direction)to hook up a tape deck to the PC sound card and make wav files from the tapes? Is a special program required to make the conversion? I know nothing, and need to start somewhere. Thanks for any ideas.

There should be some connectors on the back of your pc for the soundcard generally these go to your pc speakers instead of going to them what you cna do is go to radio shack and get an audio line that has the same connectors as your pc speakers usually they are the smaller headphone jacks yu coudl eith connect this to your speakers or connect direct to the soundcard there are two different type wires there is the stereo which has two lines in the metal usually a blue color or green color or a single line on the connector which is mono - look at a pair of headphones you will see what I mean....

depending on your soundcard you would either need two mono wires with the connectors or you need one stereo wire if you use the two mono you will have to put them to a y connector that can go into a single plug depending on if you are talking a walkman tape device or a fullsize stero would depend also if you need an adapter... to change the plug size.... also if you are going to a regular home stereo you may or may not need the Y connector check your stereo

total cost of parts about 15.00 - 25.00 available at any radio shack
