You have it in the right place but it may not be registering, or it may need other conponents to work. I suggest that you go to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/en/download/default.asp and download "Windows Media Tools" and install. It has all you need for what you want to do, including the dll. Hope it helps.

PS You could also use SFC to see if there is anything else missing from that app and reinstall from there, or just reinstall the app. Good luck.

Win 98 should see it after you install and reboot. At the Start/Run window type in or copy/paste from here C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Regsvr32.exe /i mpg4c32.dll  If the popup box shows dll is loaded I suggest you reinstall VirtualDub. Good luck

Tried that and all other options in regsvr32 but i get this annoying message. "mpg4c32.dll was loaded but the dllinstall entry point was not found" dll may not be exported, or a corrupt version of mpg4c32.dll may be in memory. Consider using pview to detect and remove it".

Again, I think your best option is to reinstall the program after you remove the old one from the add/remove control panel.
There must be something else missing that's interacting with it negatively.

Hum... well is there any other to register the dll files? I went and read the faqs in vdub page, and all i need to open the asf files is mpg4c32.dll. Would regsvr32.exe work on any other dll files? i might have to do this again with other dll files in the future.

You can download a trial copy of " Perfect Companion" shareware from ZDnet or other, and do it the easy way. Cant give you url now, but you should find it easy.

Read the above comments man!!!. As i said it didn't work. And why is your answer the same as centery's comments?

sdland1Commented:
well, i'm sorry i skipped over the other comments. that is just a common fix. you should delete that file add remove doesnt always remove all runtimes and reinstall if that doesnt get it find a copy of that dll on the web and manualy replace it sorry about the repeated comment

I'm not quite following your comments. What i'm trying to do is to get mpg4c32.dll registered in win98 so i can use virtualdub to decompress the ASF files. Now i had windows media tools installed before that's where i got my mpg4c32.dll from. I then decided that I didn't want the whole media tools, so I restored my HD image. I copied the dll file into windows/system folder and ran regsrv32.exe, but it didn't work. I got an error message with that. Centery... I tried that perfect companion but there's no help. If anyone can solve this problem i'll increase more points and give Agrade.

It seems to me that you may be going up the wrong path. The're no question in my mind that the dll is registered at this point.
I get the feeling that you're trying to patch two apps together. If that's the case, you may be in for a long haul.  As much as windows tries to be helpful with suggestions or error messages, my feeling is that 9 out of 10 it will take you up the wrong path.
It's not that hard to delete and reinstall the program. What's the hesitation?
When you installed media tools did virtualdub work?

I know this may sound real stupid but i just don't like having window media tools in my system because i'm not using it. all i need is the dll file so vdub can read the decompressor. And yes virtualdub worked when media tools is installed. Well I guess if no one can help me with this i might just have to install media tools again. thanks

Now that you have perf comp, use the other part of the program (you can also do the same with SFC, but not as easy I think) and take a picture of your syatem files before you load media tools.
Install media tools.
Go back to Perf Comp and finish the file picture.
Open the view box. Now you're looking at everything that media tools installed. this should give you a clue as to what else may be missing in your sys file.
You can do a search for those items, save them to another location, and uninstall media tools.
Now you have all the sys and dll files you need to make virtualdub work.
Which ones you need to save and put back in the appropriate directory or discard is for you to play with.
You may want to put them all in and see if it works. If that doesn"t do it, reinstall.
Good luck.
P S you may have other apps that do the same regarding installation pics such as Cybermedia, etc.

Well i'm gonna give up on this. I took a picture of my system and it still seemed that all I need was mpg4c32.dll. however I couldn't get it to be registered. Anyway thanks for your help, i'm gonna give you the point.

I think you're trying too hard. Pc's and programs can be very unforgiving at times. By your comment that "it still seemed" tells me that you're not sure you've done what you can or are missing a small step in the process..
Sleep on it and try again another time. I'm sure it will come to you.
Good Luck and let me know if you're successful.
