Eric, this can be caused by a number of things, but primarily by either a problem with your sound card or because the drivers for the sound card are bad or corrupt.

Work your way through this and we can take a more drastic approach if necessary.

First, boot your computer into safemode.

Now click Start, Settings, Control Panel and then click the System Icon and then click the Device Manager tab.

Now go into device manager and scroll down to the sound card entries, which should be found under Sound Device.

Click the + sign to expand it.

Highlight each device and click remove.

Now restart your computer. Windows will find and reload the sound card devices during the restart process and load the drivers.

Now test the system. If the sound is still poor or skips, uninstall the sound card software and repeat the removal process from above.

No reload the sound software from the cd or disks that came with the sound card and reboot. This will force windows to load the fresh drivers.

Note: If your sound card is one of the more common ones, you may be able to download more current drivers from the manufacturers website.

Let me know how you make out!

This is the same advice i got from a Sony FAQ service support page. It did not fix the problem when I reinstalled the sound card. I'm using a Sony notebook model PCG-748. What other advice do you have.

Okay let's see if we can narrow the field some. While off line, can you play a wav without it skipping?

Yes sometimes. I have played a music cd without skips but I have tried to play the sounds at control panel sounds icon and had some success playing the sounds for about 12 times before it skips.

Okay then, let's narrow it down. Go back into control panel, sounds and go through each sound and test it and jot down which ones fail.

Shut the system down and wait about 10 minutes and then restart it and run the tests again and compare the results against the list you made earlier.
