how to make an emulator program in VB6

Has anyone made an emulator program that they care to share.  Or know of a good book I can buy that has source code for creating such a program in vb?

... I am currently using a hyperterminal but need to build a program with a GUI...

I am using the MSComm application already, but I needed know how to create the grid that displays the ANSI escape sequences.  In the MSComm program it just dumps it all into one text box.  I was hoping to find code to map the escape sequences.
