free web server

I am thinking to install either Xitami or Omnicron freeware web server on my win 98.

my questions are :

 - which one is more secure ?
 - any bad new about either of them ?
 - which oe is good with PERL ?
 - Is PERL win 32 version secure in Win9X enviroment ?
 - any other free web server is better than these two.

There are plenty of free webservers that are good in Win9x environment.

I run any of the three:
Sambar (
Apache (

Sambar and Apache have GUI addons to run then on the Systray rather than a window and are highly configurable and both support ActiveState's Perl for Win9x.  I think they are two of the best freeware servers out there.

For other free servers check out:
It has ratings, descriptions and direct downloads.
This is a better site that has a complete listing and description of all webservers (free and COTS):

Its description of Xitami was good.
I used OmniCron in the past, I didn't like it.  Why can't you use PWS?  The latest port of Perl from ActiveState is compatible with virtually every large webserver out there, Netscape, IIS, PWS, Apache, the many UNIX flavors... I don't know about the Omnicron 95/98 version though, the Professional version does support Perl.  And yes Perl Win32 is secure.

I recommend the PWS version of IIS4.0 that comes on your 98 cd, if you don't have it, you can download the NT option pack that contains it from MS.  Is supports Perl, ASP, VBScript, JavaScript, and Jscript with ease.
