Have you tried removing your plug-ins and the trying to start the program? The ICC engine is a color profile. Try going to control panel >display>settings and click on the advanced tab. Change your ICC profile to RGB or sRGB. You can also try removing the preferences file in the Photoshop directory.

Hey Joe,you will find the preferences file in the Photoshop directory in a folder called, for example, "Photoshop5.5 Settings",( if you're using 5.5). The file will be called "Adobe Photoshop5.5Prefs.psp. Try temporarily moving the file, and then try starting Photoshop. Have you un-installed, then re-installed Photoshop?

Joe509,

There is a very precise procedure for installing 5.5 over an installation of version 5.  You cannot install the 5.5 upgrade on top of 5.0, or it will cause the problems you are describing.

Do a complete uninstall of PS.  Move any images or actions, or other items you want to keep to a temporary directory, and completely remove the adobe directory structure.  You may have to uninstall Acrobat reader as well.  Then do a clean install of 5.5 and reinstall Acrobat reader.  Your program should start correctly now.

joe509,

Joe, you must have a defective disk from Adobe.  I recommend that you call Adobe Customer support.  They can replace the disk.

HI THERE FOLKES, IM IN THE MIDDLE OF DOING YOUR SUGGESTION KENCAM [ I HAVE 3 FULL PROGRAM DISKS PS 4, 5, AND 5.5 IVE OPTED TO USE 5.5 FOR THE INSTALLATION AS ITS THE BEST VERSION FOR MY WORK] THE STORY SO FAR MY ADOBE FOLDER CONTAINED ACROBAT 4, PS5.5, ILLUSTRATOR 8, AND IN DESIGN, VERY RELUCTANTLY I HAVE UNINSTALLED ALL OF THESE PROGS, SCAN DISK, DEFRAG AND HAVE YET TO INSTALL ANY ADOBE STUFF AGAIN ONTO THE HD.
FOR CEVR, I HAVE GONE THRU PS FOLDER [WHEN IT EXISTED!] EVEN TO THE PIONT OF SHOWING ALL FILES IN THE VIEW OPTION AND EITHER ITS ME OR ITS A CONSPIRACY BUT IN EITHER PS 4 DISK, 5 DISK OR 5.5 DISK I CANNOT FIND A PREFS FILE OR FOLDER, THE SETTING FOLDER IS THERE ALRIGHT BUT NO PREFS. REMOVED ALL PLUGINS AND OTHER EXTRANIOUS INFO. --HOWEVER-- HERES SOMETHING INTERESTING; WHEN I WENT INTO CONTROL PANEL AND DUBCLIK [SORRY SHORT FOR DOUBLE CLICK] THE ADOBE GAMMA FILE I GOT AN EXCLAMATION MARK WARNING - UNFORTUNATLY I DIDNT WRITE IT DOWN SO I CANT TELL YOU EXACTLY WHAT IT SAID, BUT THE JIST OF IT WAS THAT THERE WAS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE FILE AND WINDOWS COULDNT READ IT. ANY IDEAS?
FOR BOTH OF YOU, PRVIOUSLY I RAN ALL OF THESE INDIVIDUAL PS VERSIONS AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER PERFECTLY USING AN AMD K6-2 450 ONA SINGLE CHIP BOARD [WHICH GREATIVE LABS SO KINDLY BLEW UP FOR ME BEFORE XMAS]. THIS MESSAGE IS ONLY AN INTERIM MESSAGE AS I HAVE NOT YET COMPLETED YOUR SUGGESTIONS. CHEERS JOE

OK ITS THE NEXT DAY ANDF IVE COMPLETED ALL OF YOUR SUGGESTIONS, EVERYWHICH WAY POSSIBLE AND EVERY LOGICAL THING I CAN THINK OF TO GET THIS ****ING PROG WORKING, BUT ALAS NO GO.
ILL ASK YOU TO HAVE A LOOK AT MY SYSTEM CONFIG AT THE TOP OF THE PAGE AND SEE IF YOU CAN ID ANYTHING THAT IS IN MY HARDWARE THAT MAY BE CAUSING SOME SORT OF CONFLICT. [I HAVE JUST THIS MINUTE BOUGHT A SECOND PIII500 AND AN ADDITIONAL 128RAM ID HAVE GONE FOR 256 ONLY RAM IS VERY EXPENSIVE HERE], A FRIEND CAME OVER TO SEE IF HE COULD DO SOMETHING AND HE MENTIONED SOMETHING ABOUT A PREVIOUS PROBLEM WINDOWS 98SE HAD WITH PS 4 - SOMETHING TO DO WITH VIRTUAL MEMORY EI:THAT PS READ THAT IF YOU HAD MORE THEN 2GIGS OF HDD SPACE IT WOULDNT START UP.
I GENUINLY THINK THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH MY CONFIG [DUAL BOARD SINGLE CHIP ETC] AS I CAN FIND NO OTHER LOGICAL REASON FOR THIS PROBLEM.
KENCAM, I HAVE CONSISTANTLY PHONED ADOBE OVER THE LAST MONTH AND THEY KEEP SAYING THAT THEY WILL NOT HELP ME AS "YOUR ENQUIRY IS NOT AN ADOBE PROBLEM" WAS ONE OF THE REPLIES I GOT, AND MORE RECENTLY I KEEP GETTING A TECHNICIAN IN ADOBE WHO SAYS THAT MY SERIAL NUMBER IS NOT VALID. WHAT DO I DO? SELL MY DISKS OR TAKE THEM TO COURT?
IF YOU HAVE any FURTHER SUGGESTIONS PLEASE HELP IM WILLING TO SPEND ALL OF MY MEASLY 115 POINTS ON GETTING THIS RESOLVED.

THANKYOU VERYVERY MUCH FOR YOUR INPUT, NOW I WONT HAVE THE PICTURE EDITOR SCREAMING DOWN THE PHONE AT ME EVERYDAY!
I THANK BOTH OF YOU VERY MUCH.
