Where to start?

I want to learn how to program for linux. I have never programmed before and would like to ask if anyone can suggest any good books to start with.

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

First get yourself a C or C++ book. For the first programs
you will write it is not important if you write them in DOS
or Linux. The C book I was using was from authors of
C language Kernighan and Ritchie. C++ book has also
written a C++ author Bjarne Stroustroup. First you need
to learn programming. For now it is irrelevant for which
system. If you know how to program for one system you
quickly switch to another.
A REALLY good book is "Beginning Linux Programming", Neil Matthew & Richard Stones, WROX PRESS $29.56
