asked on

strange win98

when my computer is on about every 2-4
hours the computer starts running something that causes the a drive to start, the hdd to start running. No matter what program i'm in, internet
or not. I have checked control, alt,
delete to see what apps are  running,
but have not found anything yet. As far
as I know it is not hurting anything,
but I'd still like to know what is causing this.
Thanks Bob Akers

Sounds like an anti-virus program running in the background. Do you have one set to check your system at a regular interval?
How about Maintenance Wizard? is it perhaps doing a schelduled task??

Bob, check your anti-virus program settings to see if its scanning the "A" drive as well as your hard drive.

Hi Ray, now that's timing!
Hi Dennis
It was planned that way!!

It's my story
I know, "and you're sticking to it"
do you have MS office, if so, fast find has started to work
olf the only thing i know of that makes both the a drive and the hdd run would be disk clean up, im not exaclty sure why a program running doesn't always come up when ctrl, alt, delete is pushed i know sometimes i have a problem with shut down it asks if i want quite running or wait when pressing cancel and checking i see nothing active. i would check my scheduled tasks to see if disk clean up is active.

sorry for rambling
ok you can check for any hidden programs by doing this:

Run Regedit located in C:\windows\regedit.exe

Then double click on... HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

and follow this path... in it there will be a number of programs, if you see anything that should not be there, delete it and see if it cures the problem..

Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices   <<here as well there may be something hidden, simply delete it (write down the link first :))

Ok then... thats the two main ways of something being there without you knowing....

Hope that Helps

rayT, has already suggested that.....
coats_it, your are new to this site, and with that, welcome. However, unlike Newsgroups and Usenets, we observe a protocol or policy at this site with which you should become familiar. Experts do not post proposed answers that are incomplete or that are speculative, nor do they post proposed answers that incorporate the comments of others that have preceded you. By doing so, you block the question from the view of another expert who may have a solution to the problem. Since questioners can accept comments as answers, it is beneficial to the questioner that speculative answers be posted as comments, especially when the issue involves further troubleshooting. Hopefully you will cooperate with us in the future.

you have the option of changing your "proposed" answer to a comment, please do that since I had already mentioned it.

olf20
please reject the proposed answer by coats_it since that info had already been posted in a comment, please don't support the answer stealers.
OLF20, can you please explain why you accepted coats_it's answer when he was only repeating what RayT333 had posted previously?
Hi,

Since this question was awarded to the wrong expert I have issued a question to rayt333 to claim his points. (Q.10301581)
