required DLL file not found
Windows 98 reports: Error Starting Program/ A required .DLL file, DMHOOK.dll was not found.
This appeared after installing MS Office or some network protocols. I have removed and reinstalled them and this message is still there. All Programs that have been tried are working OK
Please advise how to solve this.

Try reinstalling DirectX and see if that helps!
vsaric, dmhooh.dll isn't either an office or Windows 98 DLL file. Have you tried running Find, Files and Folders to see if it's on your system anywhere?

click START - RUN - and type "MSCONFIG" it lists the startup in the registyr which is different than any other start list, do reverse engineering to figure out what is lookin for the dll
try do define what program try to load this dll - look in the startup folder, or in the .\Run registry key (you can access it from regedit or from Win98 system tools.) - when you will find this program, try to reinstall or remove it from sturtup.
vsaric, have you tried to put the DLL in the directory in which your application is to be found?

Another way to find what is calling for DMHOOK.DLL is to use the Find files/folders and place dmhook.dll in the "containing text" field.
I did an internet search for "DMHOOK.DLL" and got NO HITS.

Technet did not have ANY hits for DMHOOK.DLL for ANY of their software...
Must be an echo in here. Several posts earlier I noted that that file is not a Microsoft file.

Now that Aidy mentions this, recall seeing this before when I had a Diamond MM card and their In Control Tools (which caused me some problems with Win98); had to download fixes from www.diamondmm.com.

Thank you all for trying to help me.
The error message changed the next time Istarted the PS pointing to an install.exe file in windows\temp folder.
It was Diamond stealth card In Control tools program that was not fully installed. After reinstallation no error message apeared.
I will give my 200 points to aidy and astaec for being the nearest to the right ansver. However I managed to fix the problem before reading their answers.
Thanks anyway

Aidy has the 200 points, and I am happy to have been of some help anyway.

Sorry astaec - is there any way to transfer some of the points to you?
No problem, Aidy. The normal way to distribute points among team-mates is that the person who was awarded the full amount then posts half (or whatever increment if more than two are involved in the approved solution)as a new Question, and the subject line merely stating .... Points for astaec (or whomever).... and then in the content box, placing the link to the original Q in which the parties participated. In this case, it would be:
https://www.experts-exchange.com/jsp/qShow.jsp?ta=win98&qid=10291545
You then become the person who awaits a response from that expert and once entered, you then accept and grade their answer.
The grade given is equal to the grade received by the initial expert paid, which for this Q is an "A".
The alternative process means sending note with zero points in the Customer Service area to help. That, however, I don't do; since they're already inundated.
Thanks,
Asta

OK =0) Look for my post then....
Ummm, doesn't that mean I'll still have received 200 points (times the grade) whilst you only get half of that? I know that expert points cannot be used as question points....
Yes, you raise an interesting point. However, I don't know the workaround to resolve and don't think it worthy of the effort to further explore. Half's better than nada.
Thanks for caring; may be a good zero point question to post in Customer Service and/or the Suggestion area to ensure that future implementation of enhancements includes an option to modify point adjustments between experts.

Well I don't often need to post questions anyway so I'll give you the full points. Would you like to post the suggestion or shall I?
I will post the suggestion; and you please only post half. That's what been done and seems quite fair.
Thanks for bringing this question up, Aidy. I've posted it in the Customer Service area; here's the Q if you wish to participate or read. Q.10293393
