Cannot access Seagate tape backup in WinNT service pack5

i have Seagate STT20000A Tape Backup drive. I cannot access the drive. getting errors "device reported error on request to mount tape"
"device received invalid command ref#05-20-23-00-8081"

this drive has been replaced and is still getting the same error messages.

i'm running windows NT w/service pack5.
the drivers for the tape backup have been uninstalled and reinstalled several times.
the same for the software for the drive.

any suggestions or fixes?

Sounds like you're using the wrong drivers.
Please double check the model type and the drivers you're using.
The message is saying that the device does not understand the command you're giving it (which suggests incorrect drivers, possibly configuration).
I've had similar problems in the past which were fixed with a firmware update.  You should be able to get the latest version from the Seagate website ( or whoever you purchased the drive/server from.  This sort of thing tends to happen when you apply an NT service pack.

that's what i suspected, that it was the service pack. this afternoon i am gonna drop down to service pack 3 and see what happens.
