right click on my computer select properties then go to device manager click the plus sign next to modems then click on your modem select properties then click on the modem tab and adjust the speaker volume all the way to the left

Yes, I think that is the right way to disconnect the sound, but for some reason when I got there, the volume of the modem was already off (all the way to the left) and the sound persist...

Try going into network neighborhood look for your internet connection and then select properties and there may be a proprietary settting in there to listen to the modem

you can also try this
You have to go to modem properties --> Connection --> Then click on Advanced.  In the extra settings text box, you will need to enter the appropriate AT command settings to turn off sound during connect.  Check your modem manual for the command.
