Okay, let me see if I can have you understand a little about what is happening. While, in truth, you aren't on your own network, however you are on someone's network, namely that of your ISP by way of a digital subscriber line. Think of it this way, your ISP has the server network and you're one of a multitude of PC's connected to it. While no one can directly see your PC other than the ISP, others on the same network can learn of your existence as you have either a manually set static IP address or one provided via DHCP by the server. While I doubt the majority of other DSL users yould engage in a malicious attack, you are vunerable as the DSL line is always active.

With all this having been said, it doesn't matter whether or not your sending sensitive data, it is whether someone can access and then damage your system or files. Blackice is about the easiest of the filewalls to configure to prevent malicious attacks.

Hopefully this answers your questions, but if it doesn't, then ask away!

Suggest that you consider downloading the firewall at this site: http://www.zonelabs.com/zonealarm.htm

Its free to individual users and gives a test site to check your security both before and after installation.

koiman, your are new to this site, and with that, welcome. However, unlike Newsgroups and Usenets, we observe a protocol or policy at this site with which you should become familiar. Experts do not post proposed answers that are incomplete or that are speculative, nor do they post proposed answers that incorporate the comments of others that have preceded you. In cases like this one, all answers are subjective and should be left to the choice of the questioner as to which best serves their purpose. By posting an answer as you have, you block the question from the view of another expert who may have a solution to the problem. Since questioners can accept comments as answers, it is beneficial to the questioner that speculative answers be posted as comments, especially when the issue involves further troubleshooting. Hopefully you will cooperate with us in the future.

Free Tool: Subnet Calculator

The subnet calculator helps you design networks by taking an IP address and network mask and returning information such as network, broadcast address, and host range.

One of a set of tools we're offering as a way of saying thank you for being a part of the community.

JCT, you may want to visit this URL and review BlackIce. It's been reviewed in PCWorld, Windows Magazine, PCWeek and several others, and we use it in both stand-alone as well as server environments. It's completely configurable and the data base to prevent new intrusions is updated frequently. It's not free, but rarely is something worthwhile truly free.

Dennis, I thank you for your response to my question, and would like to ask a follow up question at this time.  What is a firewall and what does it do?  I understand the security issue, but do I need to be concerned if I am not sending private data out?  Can anyone get into my system once my DSL service is up and running, or is a firewall over kill?

Thank You

Dennis:

My DSL will be dynamic IP and not static IP will this have any additional security built in?
