You delete the background layer by double clicking on it and changing its name to whatever the default is. Then (make sure theres at least 2 layers in your image) drag that layer to the pallet trash.<br />

If your image is still leaving a white edge then youre copying white space from around the image and not just the parts within. Copy/new/paste only works if theres transparency around what youre copying.
