Transparent Backgrounds

How do you make a background transparent around an image or how can I resize the canvas so that it is the exact size of the image?

To make the background transparent within photoshop you delete the "Background" layer which is filled with white. To get the canvas to be the exact same size as what it contains you select whats contained in the canvas, copy, create a new canvas (which wil by default have the dimensions of your copied object) and then paste into the new canvas.

But how do you delete the background layer that is white? And I tried the copy and new method and it still leaves a white edge around it.

You delete the background layer by double clicking on it and changing its name to whatever the default is. Then (make sure theres at least 2 layers in your image) drag that layer to the pallet trash.

If your image is still leaving a white edge then youre copying white space from around the image and not just the parts within. Copy/new/paste only works if theres transparency around what youre copying.
