Win98 Briefcase EXACTLY how to use

My uncle asked me how to use Briefcase in Windows 98 to backup his system from desktop computer to a portable computer.  I've done this, but cannot recall.

Comments, pleasse on what EXACTLY is needed, both hardware, software and settings to back up a desktop computer to a laptop computer using Windows 98 and Briefcase?

Thanks.

To create a New Briefcase folder

Click Start, point to Programs, and click Windows Explorer.
Double-click the folder in which you want to create the New Briefcase folder.
On the File menu, point to New, and then click Briefcase.

To check the status of a file or folder in My Briefcase

In My Briefcase, point to the file or folder you want to check.
On the File menu, click Properties.
Click the Update Status tab.
Notes
You can find the copy of the file that is outside My Briefcase by clicking Find Original on the Update Status tab.
You can check the status of all your My Briefcase files and folders by clicking Details on the View menu. A status column appears in the main My Briefcase window.

To synchronize files on connected computers

On your portable computer, copy files from shared folders on your main computer to My Briefcase.
Work on your files on your portable or laptop computer.
When you have finished working on the files, connect the two computers, and then double-click My Briefcase.
On the Briefcase menu, click Update All.
Or, to update only some files, click the files you want to update, and then click Update Selection.

Notes
When you copy files from your main computer to My Briefcase, the two computers must be connected, either over a network or by a cable.
When you work in your files, your computers do not need to be connected.

To synchronize files by using a disk

Insert a disk into a disk drive on your main computer.
Copy files to My Briefcase.
Drag the My Briefcase icon to the disk.
The contents of My Briefcase are copied to the disk.
Insert the disk into a disk drive on your portable or laptop computer, and then edit the files in My Briefcase.
When you are ready to synchronize the files, reinsert the disk containing My Briefcase into a disk drive on your main computer, and then double-click My Briefcase.
On the Briefcase menu, click Update All.
Or, to update only some files, click the files you want to update, and then click Update Selection.

you need a laplink cable which is like a parallel printer cable but crosses all the lines over so you can connect laptop and desktop via parallel ports. it's not a printer cable. Also get 8 bit not 4 bit which are twice as fast.
Also you need to install NetBEUI on both pc's for the parallel comms to work. You had to get a program from the win95 cd that invoked the connection, i'm not sure about 98, probably install it from add software. You run the program on both PC's and choose either host or slave, make the laptop host and you get access to shares set up on the slave desktop's hard disk.

Then use Breifcase like rayt333 says

Hi, Deidra (Knine).

Your timing couldn't be better.  Listening further.

Thanks for pointing this out, Dennis.  I believe Rolf had tried much of this from Windows 98 HELP on the Briefcase piece. Only had normal parallel cable, though; and probably not the NetBeui piece (will confirm with him today).
What a team.

Sorry,  don't get that this can work to back up a system and/or copy a whole hard drive to another drive.  I've since spent a lot of time researching various knowledge bases, talking with friends and here's what I've heard and found:

There's a 1.44 limit in this

It's not meant to backup or replicate entire drives; just to synchronize boring, normal txt or XL$ types of files.

So, this cannot be used, and therefore no help here, right?  That is, Briefcase just isn't the way at all to go about his.

Thanks, wondering about all this and maybe should close.  What's your thought?

Since there isn't one contributor to this process so far, but two provided 'some' help, how do I go about handling these point values?  Didn't find it to be the solution, but still feel I want to pay some.

Please advise me.

1.44 limit??? Not going to back up much with that. You need a zip drive or something bigger.
You can use MS backup to back the entire HD up if you want, to a floppy disk, but you had better have several boxes of floppies.

You don't need to use the briefcase for making backup copies, what the briefcase is designed for was for two system running the same program and you use each at different times and you want them th share the files and keep both updated at the same time so each computer has the same files on it no matter which one you imputted the new data into. You use the briefcase to compare the files and update as needed. This is kinda a rough explanation of the briefcase but from the sound of your last comment you don't need it, just use backup.

As for the points. your call there.

The issue is this, Briefcase isn't the fix.  You helped me see information within Windows 98 Help, and thanks for that and your help there.  Then, SteveWaite helped me determine the proper cable.

Neither helped me actually solve my situation.

Yet, I'd like to pay you both a bit.

I believe because you were both willing to help and responsive to my request, I'd like to give you both As.

How do I do this, since neither solved my whole issue, and I wish to acknowledge each of your with

100 points each and an A grade.

Help me to accomplish this goal.

Busy, can't check back too often.

Tell me.

Thanks.

Just noticed, that in using my Mom's computer, I signed in with her ID, sorry.  But nonetheless, my question to you.

So, I'm sure she'll tell me the input and/or I'll see it next time I check my own Email.

Appreciate your help.

Since this didn't solve what she really wanted then she should just delete the question.

Asta CuTechnical consultant & graphic designCommented:
Thanks, Rayt333, and my options to her as well when she mentioned her situation.  However, she said she wants to pay whomever she had commented on and so she needs to figure out how to do that.

Rereading this thread, she wanted to pay you both some diminished value but still give you both an "A" for your responsiveness and for your efforts.

I suspect this needs to be handled through customer service as I've learned, so since you've taken the initiative, Rayt333, perhaps just do a Q in the customer support area to check this Q and give you both half.

Check my SUGGESTION about point splits, I think this should be handled via a CALC in the Suggestion area.

If she's willing to pay her points for the effort and award an A, go for it!

Well if I felt the points were deserved then I might say so, but I feel she asked a question and after a few comments from us she has realized this was not what she needed, so I feel we help guide her but is a points paying way, If she asked a question and we provided her the answer then NP, but this was only a few comments designed to see just what she was looking for, nothing more.

If you feel otherwise then thats OK, I'm not going to refuse any points, but in this case I'm sure not going to ask for any.

My Mom said you'd be caring and give a lot, and she was right.  Although I'd like to award you both with points, don't know how to do this.

AND ... you, Rayt333, were most responsive, I wish to thank you.  If you can then share the points that would be appreciated; just don't know how to accomplish this.

I give you both A's for your responsiveness.  True, you didn't meet my specific goals, also true, you cared equally to provide a solutions.  Fair is fair, that's what I know to be right.

Distribute how you can.

Thanks a lot.  (Also, thanks, Mom for helping me through these things and pointing to others who can fill the gap).

She and I agree, it's the right thing to do, pay for the contributions.  She hates my systems and setups and uses them now and then.  But bottom line, she knows what she wants and she wishes to reward contribution.

That's my baby!

Please do what you feel is right here.

Thanks, Deidra, for taking time to invest in the possibilities within E-E; it's a great team.

Good morning,

I checked this out, Rayt333, it is so so so sad.  When I was in my turmoil, I just finally threw up my hands, took all and any of the blame and requested that she just let it go.  That I wanted peace.  What a fiasco.

Yes, Dennis, Deidra is my baby; I thought you knew that.

Back to Rolf's computer, this AM.  What a hell, uninstalled his old NORTON's, and now can't even boot into SAFE MODE, says setup is missing or some other darned thing.  Will probably have to run setup from DOS, via EBD with CDROM support.

Thanks all for your help, and thank you, Rayt333, for handling the point distribution effort.

There were so many problems and anomlies and 'at risk data files', they ended up using Xcopy and many manual processes to resolve some of the issues.

Experts-Exchange is a very helpful forum.  (Although I wish (Mom) you'd step away from it for a while, at lease until some of the problem personalities or issues are resolved).  Since it appears you've made friends here, and they're likely to be listening in, know they'd encourage you likewise.  Many more rewarding feelings abound in our world.

I agree with you about " problem personalities" but unfortunely nothing will be done, seems strange that even though several people have trouble with a certain "E" yet we are the problem????

I came here to help others and learn something in the process, the points are no more then a status symbol anyway, I really don't care that much about "status", the only thing thats gets me is if the wrong person gets credit for someone eles's answer and then gloats about it.

I don't know about Asta but I am really cutting back on the problems I try to solve, I don't need the headaches trying to put up with crybabies, I should spend more time doing something to make money instead of doing it for free. I am supposed to be working on a computer right now but instead I am here??? Go figure!

Hi, Rayt333,

I'm finally trying to close my old issues, responding to EMAIL, and one was a note from Deidra (Knine).  She wants me to quit this for a while until either Experts-Exchange changes the process and eliminates answers altogether or finds other ways to handle the kinds of issues she's seen me experience with one specific user.

She was appreciative of your help, and NO, she was not talking about you.

It's been quite a rewarding experience working here these years, and everyone (save one) has made it worthwhile.  That other one, though, has won.  Since the other person apparantly has the ability to set policy at E-E, how to way what when, and be held in high regard, regardless of her verbal assaults, I need to explore other avenues.
