Im not sure i understand what youre looking for...Ideas for a photoshop project?

Do you mean some creative idea on the digital image? or you want to develop photoshop plugin?

Have a surf about the web and look for some graphics that you think are cool (but not too complicated)

Then try to recreate them yourself from scratch in Photoshop.

As you get better, you can try more complicated things.

You could have some research work based on the layer technology which PhotoShop is using.

Try making a good composite still morph (just made that one up.) Basically make a mask using a scan of of ink splattered on paper or something like that. Try expoloring two or three major contrasting themes of society. For example, religion and technology. Find some really high definition images that are really indicative of both. Using your image that will be your mask, all black on one side then kind of spattered to all white on the other with some of the opposite color on each side. Then using layers, filters, blah, basically learn through trial and error, make them seem to have been splattered together.

1. try manipulating a scanned photo, put in some effects from the plugins, filters.
2. using a 3d program (eg: 3d max), make a 3d scene and retouch the scene using photoshop
3. create primitive shape using the select area tool, put a color and apply some effects
4. import pictures from internet or scanned pictures, rearrange and retouch all the images to produce one single interesting picture

I somtimes tend to gather some images from various sources and look through them till one catches my eye, not nessaceraly(?) the image but the theme that it suggests to me and create an image based on that

Although there is of course what some people call Art for Arts sake. ie don't use a theme.
you could also create an image that convays a mood or feeling to you rather than a physical idea.
