rnarang98,
The are a few UNIX variant that are suitable for PC and compatibles (x86) machine.  The one that I normally (recommend) is Linux http://www.linux.org especially RedHat (http://www.redhat.com), because it's easy to install, and configure, plus the GUI is cool.

Another variance is Solaris.  Perhaps you have head of Sun Microsystem.  They too have a version of Solaris for Intel machine (http://www.sun.com/solaris)

Distrubing you WIN98 - depends on whether you still have any more free space on you hard disk.  I would recommend you to get another hd, or try to repartition you hd into a few partition.  Check out PArtition Magic.  They are very good.

Don't panic! - Linux is just one variant of Unix, but it's as good as any to start with. Your machine is fine for Linux - It's not as resource hungry as Windows!

The utilities that come with e.g. RedHat Linux will do the partitioning for you without messing up Windows, or you can get a third-party utility to do it.

If you've got 1Gb free space on your 8Gb disk, that will give you plenty to experiment with without having to resize partitions later - tho' as samri says, a second HD would be simpler and 100% safe.

The choice of which Linux is yours - they are all "free" - You download for the cost of a phone call & do it all yourself, or you pay a few $ for the CD, manual and support; I personally would recommend paying a bit for RedHat, just for the support.

Official Red Hat Linux 6.1/Intel Standard Edition -- is this what I want?
What is Linux Server now? Am i just setting Linux OS as I have WIN98 OS.. or is this some kind of server .. Wud I be working on a standalone PC for accessing my LInux or do I need to connect to INTERNET for doing that

sorry for so many questions but I am increasing the points also.. :))

Standard edition gives you everything you need to get started with Unix as a "standalone" system, (but with dialup/ network access to servers, so it's equivalent to your Windows PC).

In fact, it WOULD be a multi-user system, supporting telnet & ftp connection to it, but you wouldn't be using those features immediately.

You won't be able to use Windows at the same time as Linux - But you might eventually decide to scrap Windows altogether :)

The Deluxe version might give you some useful tools for later on, but you can download what you want then anyway.

The professional edition is for if you want to set up a secure, dedicated web/ftp server - You could buy an obsolete PC to do that, and use your existing PC to network to it.
