Personnel Web Server

To use ASP I tried installing PWS on my Windows 98 PC, but it gave an error when setting up MS Transaction Server. I have read that MTS is not actually required for PWS to work, however I can see no evidence that the setup for PWS worked correctly. Eg should setup create a program group for PWS?

Some versions of PWS don't even work. Make sure the version you use comes from the NT Option Pack. I'm not sure if the installation will create a program group but it will create an icon in your system tray.
Check out the following article in Microsoft's KB.  It has a link to download a problem that will correct the error you encountered during pws setup.

I also get the same error but it has no effect on normal use

The exe file should be installed at

And you should get a pws icon in your system tray.  To test if it is working enter the following in your browser address bar

http://localhost and you should get a welcome page

Sometimes the pws will not start its service when you boot up so what I have done is placed a shortcut to pws.exe on my desktop.  Then if you boot up and the icon is not in the system tray open pws.exe and click on start to activate PWS

Do not use the PWS that come with the NT option pack as it is only for NT and WIN95. Check your Win98 installation CD and you will find the PWS for Win98 setup files in  "add-ons/pws" directory.

dsa7: I downloaded the mts dll, reinstalled PWS and its now running and indicated in the system tray - excellant!

I also found the program group for PWS after looking a bit harder. I have used PWS from the Win98 CD. My ASP book advised that this installation was least problematical.
