Scanjet copy utility not working

I have a HP scanjet 5P scanner and a HP DeskJet 870Cse printer. They have both worked flawlesly for 2 years. Recently however when trying to use the Scanjet copy utility to make a copy of a document I get only horizontal lines across the width of the page, lots of them, sometimes maybe 40 to 50 lines spaced erratically and sometimes enough lines to make the page almost entirly black (lots of ink). I can scan a document into paper port (to the computer) with no problem.
I can also print a document from the computer with no problem. The lines only show up when I try to use the copy utility. I might add that when using the copy utility, no trace of the document that I am trying to copy shows up on the copy page, only the horizontal lines. Any Ideas?

try this

ISSUE: In preview or final image, black vertical or horizontal lines appear.

SOLUTION: Change the color palette of the video to 256 Colors. To do this:

1. Double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.

2. Double-click the Control Panel icon.

3. Double-click the Display icon.

4. Select the Settings tab; under Color Palette, select 256 Color in the drop-down box.

5. Select OK. If prompted to reboot, select Yes.

The answer from briancassin did nothing to change the scanner problem, it only changes the way the screen looks on the computer. Not even close!
I might add as a clarification, that what I am trying to do when I get the horizontal lines is to use the scanner and the printer as a copy machine. This is normaly done in the Scanjet copy utility program that comes with the scanner. It has worked in the past, just not recently
generally though lines are caused by resolution issues..

try playing the resolution settings color depth etc... see if it makes any difference
I'm not sure that all of briancssin's comments were posted on this site. I can only see a partial sentence regarding resolution issues. I don't believe that the problem with the lines is that simple however, given the fact that I can scan a picture into the computer and I can print a picture or document from any program in the computer, the only thing that I cannot do is scan a document or picture and then immediatly print that picture. ie using the scanner and printer as a copy machine. When I try to do this I get only lines across the page, no evidence of the original document at all. Do you suppose I should  reload the scanner and or the printer programs? These programs work fine for scanning and printing in every other way except when I try to scan to print.
At this point that would be my final suggestion by the way you do not have to speak in past tense or as if you are speaking to a group of people...we see the same thing you do when comments are posted up here.. .

I would say at this point uninstall all of the scanner software then reboot windows once rebooted hit ctrl, alt, delete then end task everything except for  explorer and systray then reinstall
I reinstalled the scanner software. It did nothing to help the horizontal line problem. An interesting thing happened when I tested the new install. I tryed to scan to print a page of text, the first scan produced a blank page with only two horizontal lines across it, the 2nd attempt at coping the page of text produced a page with 58 horizontal lines randomly spaced across it,(no text), the third attempt at coping the same page and not making any changes produced a page with about 2 to 3 hundred lines on it. Help!
Adjusted points to 200
Still waiting for an idea that works, but upped the ante to 200 points

If the problem is one of these two things why would the scanner work fine when I scan a document into the computer and why would the printer print fine in every application except when I scan to print? This is very perplexing indead.

I have this exact same problem, and I don't believe the above answer.
I found a work-around - choose "Text w/ Pictures" instead of "Text
or Drawing" and copying works.  (But it is presumably slower and the
quality is not as good.)

I'll use your work-around dbowen until someone can figure out a permanant cure. Your suggestion will be faster than scanning to paper port and then printing. Thanks!
