Sound Boot problem

When i 1st boot win 98 i get no sound then following help troubleshooting sound i go to settings,control panel and add new hardware and run sequence at end of this i,m ask to install manually sound,video&game controllers.click on this to find microsoft MCI for model wave audio device(media control)then finish and reboot.when i click restart my system informs me windows is restarting and cursor flashes below but 30 mins later still same.Turn machine off.Reboot and starts in safe mode.click start and shut down and restart system reboots and windows opens o.k. with my sound back.When i next turn off and then reboot my sound has gone again.How do i cure having to reboot etc.to get my sound working correctly.All devices show as working correctly in device mgr.

whne you reboot are the settings changed in the device manager when you hear the sound versus when you do not have the sound ?

What exactly is the make of your soundcard?  If you have chosen the wrong driver, it could result in what you've described.  Try find out the exact brand and model of the soundcard and download the latest driver for Win98.

It is same sound card that was fitted as new 8 Months ago and has been working perfectly o.k. until recently.According to device mgr it is PCI 288 PCI Audio.Trid.002 & under multimedia is indicated Trident PCI Playback.I seem to remember when the sound is missing under device mgr 3 PCI audio devices are listed.Hope this assists if not perhaps you can tell me how to establish sound card fitted!Comp.is Packard Bell 2400 Platinum with Philips Brilliance 151Ax LCD XGA monitor and Omega Zip 100 usb fitted.

We found a similar problem with the Creative Labs Soundblaster 16 card, model CT4180.  It seems that the card chipset conflicts with one of the controllers on the mainboard.  This conflict is not shown in the device mangler...according to Windows, everything is OK, but the sound refuses to work.  The only fix we found was to change the card model completely.  We went to the same card, but model CT4170, and the problem never reappeared.  One telltale sign of this conflict, about the only one, was that the 'Volume Control' icon in the systray would disappear.

Why don't you boot to safe mode,... restart and hold down the control key, press 3 (safe mode) on the menu that appears, remove all sound related devices from device manager. Reboot and let win98 detect and install everything again. Sometimes this simple procedure cures all. But beware sometimes win98 does NOT re-detect the devices. In this case you will have to manually install the sound card with the PROPER drivers, as previously suggested.

Sorry misunderstood your initial enquiry! No in System properties under device manager when sound works ok under sound,video&games controllers only PCI288 PCI Audio is shown but when sound is missing this device plus PCI288 Direct Input Driver and PCI288 Legacy Audio are shown.Sorry i'm not that tech.educated!

Ok hmmmm, Try going into device manager and removing all audio drivers... then let windows PNP redetect then once it has detetcted   go into device manager again go to the drivers tab see if you can see what company it is made by then go to this website http://www.gg8.com/img/internet/internet.html  and download the latest drivers then once you have downloaded the latest drivers go back into device manager go to the properties of the soundcard and the driver tab click on update driver... and install the updated drivers let me know if this fixes it

Have tried jatcans solution but still the same problem.Have also noticed when sound is not working in control panel no multimedia device is shown but is when sound works.Also find that if i go thru procedure described in 1st message and when asked if want to restart com.now i put no and then restart later i still get no sound and only way i do is to say yes but system then hangs and i have to turn off manually & when i restart it goes into safe mode after pressing option 3,then click start & shutdown with restart as choice.on reboot i get back sound and multimedia appears in control panel.Also i have still got sound icon in sys tray and shows as working ok even tho it is notwhen sound is missing.How do i establish sound card fitted my book tells me its Packard BellPCI 64 A3D but is it? Help this is sending me crazy.

Ok what you just described to me it almost sounds like an irq conflict go into device manager when the sound is not working see if there is a red x or a yellow circle with a black exclamationm point if there is double click on the device and see what the status is reported as

Have checked every device listed in device mgr and none have red x or yellow circle marked ie.every device is clear when no sound and have opened 3 PCI devices resourse tab and all show no conflicts.Don't know if this affects it or not but when comp boots 1st line states missing or corrupted file        
C:\windows\dblbuff.sys but still boots up ok.Also have PC doctor on comp.&when i check audio when sound is working under Midi both channels when i click this my screen goes blue and gives fatal exeption note& sound goes haywire.

Ok what is that fatal exception error exactly word for need i would like to know what it says it may give us a cluse as to what is going on as far as the the file that is missing on bootup this is the info. on it

DBLBUFF.SYS -- Double Buffering
===============================

Loads the Dblbuff.sys device driver to perform double buffering.
Double buffering provides compatibility for certain hard-disk
controllers that cannot work with memory provided by EMM386 or Windows
running in 386 Enhanced mode.

If Windows Setup determined that your system may need double-
buffering, it will add a DoubleBuffer=1 entry to the [Options] section
of Msdos.sys, which will automatically load Dblbuff.sys. To manually
enable double-buffering, you can either add the above entry to
Msdos.sys, or add a DEVICE command in your CONFIG.SYS file.

are there any other error messages or problems with the pc ?

You have win98se right? Did you use an upgrade disk? Either way try commenting out everything in config.sys and autoexec.bat (except virus protection) and reboot to safe mode, then uninstall all sound related devices, then reboot and let windows re-detect and re-install everything.

No other error messages.fatal reads:-
Fatal exception 06 occurs at 0000:00000017 .Have now found that i have multimedia icon in control panel when sound is not working must only be missing in safe mode during procedure i,ve described earlier.Try again.

as far as i'm aware i onlt have win98 but have downloaded from microsoft site all available updates.Cannot folow your advice as i'm not that tech.aware can you enlighten exactly please.

Dumb question, but did you check the Multimedia properties in the control panel?  There is a setting for Playback and Record devices in the audio section.  Directly under these is a checkbox that reads 'Use Preferred Devices Only'.  Make sure that this box is not checked, and the soundcard wave driver is seleced as the preferred device.  Restart and try it...if that doesn't work, try using it with preferred-only enabled, and then repeat with the setting '<Any Available Device>'.

Can somebody tell me how to establish make of sound card fitted without opening comput.book tells me it is either aztec aurealor a-3d tm or ensonic pci.In order i can carry out some of above suggestions,i,m getting desperate.Please solve my problem sound.

There are some programs out there that will do direct hardware polling...Micro House, I believe still makes one, and I think PConfig is another...I don't know if there are any free ones, though.  Most of the cheaper or freeware versions only look at what drivers and TSR's are loading, and identify with those...if the driver isn't there, then they will probably miss it, or ID it incorrectly.  I reread your original problem description...and the only other thing I can come up with is that it is entirely possible that the sound card has an intermittent hardware problem.  One other thought is that 98 doesn't always tell you if there is a problem...I had a network card in one of my 98 systems a while ago, and 98 said it was OK, no conflicts.  It was set for IRQ12, and it was the only thing on that IRQ, everything looked OK, but the card wouldn't work...I went thru 3 cards like that. After a lot of cursing, I found the fix...I reserved IRQ12 after deleting the card, so IRQ12 would not be used...I set the card up and it worked good.  Turns out there was something internally using IRQ12 and was causing a conflict, but Win98 never saw or reported it at all.  Bottom line is, don't trust Win98 when it says something is working ok...  Also, I am gathering that this system is less than a year old?  If so, call PB and tell them you have a bum card, and let them replace it under warranty...that'll at least rule out the bad card possibility...I was never fond of the hardware that PB uses...for the cost of them, at least they could use CHEAP soundblasters...instead, they save 20 cents and buy some cheapo-no name card from the yakafutomotoisiyama corporation...Trident audio cards are the pits...they still haven't figured out how to get all the bugs out of thier video cards, and they're making soundcards. If you have any kind of warranty on that system, dump the problem in thier lap, and insist the soundcard be replaced...then if you still have the problem, we can be relatively sure that it's conflicting hardware or a software problem...  Also, the card should be listed in your System Credentials package that PB gives you with a new system...look for the pack of papers that has your Drive Format Code #  in it...the rest of the info should be with it...

1.) restart PC
2.) hold "ctl" key on keyboard down while restarting
3.) choose 3 (safe mode) from menu that apears.
4.) after boot right-click "my computer"
5.) select "properties" from droop down menu.
6.) click the "deveice manager" tab.
7.) locate sound,video & game controllers" and double-click it.
8.) what you see here should tell you what type of sound card you have.
9.) click on each one and select remove one at a time. (when it asks if you are sure say "yes").
10.) restart you're PC. Have the win98 disk ready.

***Hint---if you see multiple devices in device manager while in safe mode then remove all devices pertaining to the duplication.

IE- if you see three video cards remove them all.then restart your PC, win98 will (hopefully) re-detect and re-install them properly.

have tried your fix several times and each time win 98 recognises missing items and reinstalls them on boot up.Found now only way to get sound to work is to disable PCI288 Direct Imput Driver and PCI288 Legacy Audio listed under sound,video and game contollers leaving only PCI288 PCI Audio and Rockwell wave device for voice modem as working then rebooting and i get sound all the time.Still would like to know why?
I now believe sound card to be AztecPCI288.

Sounds about right...I have a mainboard here with integrated sound (CMI8238 3D), and the only way the audio works correctly is to DISABLE the soundblaster emulation...otherwise, it conflicts with the other devices on the card, and nothing works.  Disable the SB driver, works peachy.  These offbrand sound devices, like your Aztech card, and my CMI audio device, do not work right...  Is that possibly a Trident chipset on that card?  If it comes down to the card, you have two basic options...get it to work and live with it, or replace it.  I would opt for replacement, except that you would also need to replace your modem, if that's like most other PacBells.  If you don't mind, a regular SB16 ISA goes for under $30...an SB128 PCI is like $49, and a SBLive! card is only around $100.  Might just want to replace it and get rid of the problem altogether...

see if this helps another idea would be I noticed you mentioned something above about the modem
Rockwell wave device   this is obviously for your modem... do you use your modem for voice i.e. do you take phone calls at your pc wearing a headset or using the pc speakers and a microphone ? it might be possible the rockwell is conflicting with the others try removing the rockwell wave device from device manager also make sure in your recording and playback also in your modem that you have the sound for the modem completely disabled...

i think updated drivers should fix this problem....

Have tried going to site to download latest driver but when i click on where it says here to download the site becomes unavailable to me if I go direct to aztec site i cannot see driver for PCI288 listed.However yes i have the facilities to make and take phone calls at my PC but the Rockwell Wave device for modem is not disabled i.e.not have tick against because if i did this surely i would not be able to use it any more.I have now experimented a bit more and after finding if i disabled PCI288 Direct Audio driver and PCI288 Legacy Audio leaving only PCI288 Audio working i got sound I have changed the input/output range quoted and disabled use automatic settings on the first two items above and now find i have sound o.k.and both devices show as working ok with no conflicts.However still do not understand why this should suddenly happen and if this will cause any problems later.

Every time i go to site advised above and try to download drivers for aztec soundcards i'm unable to gain access as explained,perhaps you should try and then you will understand,they are not available as far as i can see from manafacturers site,although good discription is available for PCI288 under their products desc.Where else do i go? Although as i explained the sound is now available after my mods asa above.

and then click on downloads then select viewing method as specific to your system then click on soundcards then put in your serial number when prompted you should be able to get the updates to your card there.

Please see my comment posted on Thursday,Feb.24th.It's been working ever since then every time i boot up so i haven't touched it since,apart from download sound card drivers from Packard site and tried to install but got message existing drivers were latest available so have left well alone.Again-Many Thanks.Still don't know if it will cause problems later or not-so I might be back.(Driveforce@ic24.net.(U.K.)
