My CD drive was working fine until I wanted to install a CD-ROM game.  The game didn't install, and ever since then, my CD icon does not appear on the My Computer folder, disallowing me to use my CD drive.

What can I do to get my computer to ackknowledge my CD drive again?

First of all go into your system performance. (Start, settings, ctrl panel, system, performance tab) In here you will fine one of two things.  Either it will say "Your system is configured for optimal performance" or it will tell you that one/some of your drives are in MS Dos Compatibility mode.  If you have any dos compatibility, try re-naming the autoexec.bat and config.sys to autoexec.old and config.old as windows 9x doesn't need these.  They might be trying to load a real-mode cd-rom driver that is conflicting with the windows .VXD.  If that doesn't work, boot into safe mode and check the device manager (start, settings, ctrl panel, system, device manager tab) and look under CD-ROMs, Drives, and anything else that applies on your machine.  Remove duplicates and re-boot into normal mode.

strider, You may try to inspect these: -

(1) First, checking if you've installed the TweakUi. If yes, go to the control panel, TweakUi, My computer, inspect in the drive cdrom has been unchecked. Enabled it again by checked the box next to the drive cdrom.

(2) At the normal desktop, Start-run, type "sysedit" without the quotation and at the config.sys add a line at the bottom.
     LASTDRIVE=Z
     Save the file and exit.

Let me know if you have queries and how you made it out.    pslh

A few weeks ago I too faced a similar probem.
I re-installed the cd-rom software which comes bundled in the floppy. Try doing the same it may work.
