this is not really a win98 question but I could not find a category for IE.

Using IE 5.01 Japanese version when required address is typed into the address bar site cannot be accessed

by using file - open and then typing address minus the HTTP:// the address can be accessed.

operating system is win98 Japanese.

first typing HTTP:// is not required on IE version 3.0,  4.0 .or 5.0
www.xxx.com is required on 3.0 and 4.0 but only   xxx.com is required on 5.0 and later ,of course you can type www.xxx.com if you want to it doesn't matter
you can just type a name.   xxxxx
japanese version or english shouldn't make a difference

if this doesn't help you can go to control panal/add and remove, uninstall 5.01 and a menu will come up and select repair 5.0
I think by typing the full address HTTP:\\ is the problem ,not required
