it's an SQL Server Standard Edition bundled on Visual Studio CDs (CD#2 contains all the servers). nothing special, just the version information is changed.

sorry to disappoint you.

This product is a component of Microsoft Visual C++, Enterrpise Edition, Microsoft Visual Basic, Enterprise Edition, and the Microsoft Visual Studio suite of products.

here is link for more info:

INF: How to Differentiate SQL 7.0 Standard and Developer Edition

The information in this article applies to:

Microsoft SQL Server version 7.0

The following is a list of six key differences between the English Developer Edition and the Standard Edition of SQL Server 7.0:

Autorun shows "SQL Server 7.0 Developer Edition".

The Setup title bar contains "Developer Edition".

The End User License Agreement (EULA) in Setup is the Visual Studio update EULA. For more information about the EULA, refer to the License.txt file included with the Microsoft Data Engine (MSDE).

The setup for both SQL Server and for OLAP Services do not prompt for the CD Key.

Results of "select @@version" indicate "Developer Edition".

The SQL Server Errorlog contains "Developer Edition".

In addition, the MSDE redistributables are in the \MSDE folder on the compact disk, along with a readme on how to install them.

I already had this link but it doesn't explain much as I can't log on to MSDN.
What can you do with the  developer edition ? Can you create forms etc ?
Is it just VB and Visual C++ or is it a different product ?

Thanks - I thought I was missing something, but it's just Microsoft
being cryptic again.
