Grinding noise on usage becoming so frequent two months ago, went after HP.  Am now using the second "refurbished" replacement and thought everything was OK.  Today started doing the same so decided it was time to look further and found the "problem" listed in Customer Care with shutdown-unplug-re-unlocked-replug-restart scenerio.  Worked fine this time but is that an ongoing thing/ I've been very happy with HP but this is crazy.  If appropraite please reply as well to cyples@ns.sympatico.ca..Thanks, Al

The grinding noise is related to one of thwo things.  The first is that the lock is partially engaged.  This is checked by locking and unlocking the scanner.

If that does not fix it the problem is in the hardware.  There is no other fix except service.  I believe that HP has a warranty on their refurb. replacements.  I'd contact them again and see what the offer on the table is.

I'm forming the impression that this model is somewhat prone to problems.  The original was grinding so bad I had to finally start communicating with HP since it was just slightly out of warranty.  1st replacement would not even pass test and now this the second.  I think I'll now begin negotiating a replacement.  Thanks very much.

I heard they (HP) had a replacement scheme set up for this scanner.  It may not take much negotiation - Good Luck.
