Hi,
I setup .htaccess file in my directory.  When I tried to get "REMOTE_USER" in my cgi, I got empty.  I tried to print out all environment variables and I gto nothing about "REMOT_USER".
What is wrong?
Thanks!

First in the httpd.conf (assuming apache) AllowOverride AuthConfig
should be set for the directory you're accessing.
Then, you have to create .htaccess which will have:
AuthType basic
AuthName "realm of auth"
AuthUserFile /some/file/path
require valid-user

Then, what you're trying to do will succeed.

And, depends on your version, it may be called by other name, though I've always seen it as: REMOTE_USER
