Problems w/ Scanjet 3300c and hp4440

Scanner hangs or quits.  USB host shares IRQ w/ other devices, but if I try to reassign I get message that this device can not have its IRQ reassigned.  How can I get my scanner to work???

First of all we have to determine if your usb port is working properly

This document will help you determine whether or not your computer has USB capability.

Determining USB capability

Download the file USBREADY.EXE from the following website: http://www.usb.org/shopping_bag.html.

Once this file has been downloaded, execute it, and it will tell you whether or not your Windows version contains USB capability, and whether or not your computer contains USB ports.

....

if this works and reports you have USB ports then the next step is to resolve the conflict...

I need to know what the other device is that is sharing the IRQ
in your device manager what two devices have the yellow circle with black exclamation point in it or devices that have a red x on them this signifies a conflict.

I am assuming you have win98...

you could try doing one of these two things

1. Remove the usb port from device manager then reboot the system windows Plug and Play should automatically reassign it.

2. go into device manager click on the usb port in question then click on properties go to the driver tab and then click on update driver select to let windows search have your win98 cd on hand you may need it then it will say show compatible or show all leave it on show compatible then click next and continue through until it installs the drivers and then reboot windows.

Thanks for your comment.  There are numerous items sharing IRQ with USB Host Controller including Riptide Audio, Modem Enumerator, and 2 IRQ holders for Steering blah, blah, blah.
I reserved IRQ 9 and got system to reassign USB to open address, but when I took reserve off and rebooted it reverted to its nasty habit.  Also, I checked and have full USB support.  I tried your first suggestion and will try second if I don't return this thing first!!!
are you running a usb port hub on the back of your pc ?
yes but when I reassign the IRQs, the port hub does not go with the host controller.
