6200c froze, now no scanner apps run - Help!

My 6200c on a Dell500P3 Win98 (not SE)was working fine. While scanning, it froze and I had to reboot. Then, several apps including Prec.ScanjetPro, copier, Caere OCR, office toolbar, would not work.

I tried to uninstall but Uninstall, either directly running the .exe or through Add/Remove Progs won't work. It just seems to start then...nothing. Ctrl/Alt/Del shows the task running but it doesn't respond and I often have to reboot.

The diagnostics seem to show everything is as it should be, but this is a big problem. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I forgot to mention it uses USB connection. A few days earlier I replaced the 3Com NIC with a new 100baseT card and had to reinstall the scanner software because it stopped recognizing the scanner. But the install worked and the scanner was fine until the incident reported above.

I suspect some file(s) may be corrupted, but which and how to replace them?

Thanks.

disconnect the scanner from the USB and then unplug the scanners power cord. Hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete and end task on Stimon, hpsjvxd, and hplamp if they are there. Then in the device manager remove the USB root hub, USB controller entry and then the scanner entry under imaging device.
Delete the PrecisionScan Pro directory, delete the following files from the windows\system directory:
hpsj*.* and hpsc*.*
In the windows\system directory, rename the file ctl3d32.dll to ctl3d32.old.   Reboot the PC, there will be some error messages saying some of the files deleted are missing, this is to be expected and you will be reinstalling shortly anyway.
Windows will find and install new hardware....this is the USB Controller and USB Root hub. When Windows has finished booting hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete and end task on any virus software that is running. Reinstall the scanning software, shut down and connect the scanner then reboot with the scanner plugged in to both the electrical and the USB port on the PC. Windows should find new hardware and install the  scanner drivers ( this should be from the Windows 98 CD).
If this does not work let me know and I'll see if can find anything else to try. Keep me posted

Connect further...control easier

I would like to add to brian's comments with aditional s/ware to remove
hpsj
hpscn
hpscan
scanjet
reg32.dll
hpps
hpds
twain
twunk
removing all of these will bring it back as close to scratch as posible without getting your hands dirty. As brian has mentioned remove related objects from device manager. Also another handy thing to do to ensure there is no screwy VID file do this. Click on START, RUN and type "regedit" OK. Click on the + next to H KEY_LOCAL MACHINE, click on the + next to ENUM and then scroll down to USB. Highlight the USB folder and hit delete on the keyboard. close out of regedit and reboot. Also it may pay to check to make sure when it is all booted back up that the USB is not sharing IRQ's with anything but a PCI steering. Hope this adds to the help.

Well I took your advice (both MadMax & TheRat) and it got me to where the computer found an unknown device. From there it took a few uninstall/reinstall, unplug/plug and many reboots, but THE SCANNER WORKS NOW and the system seems stable.

Anyway, thanks to you both for your help. I don't know how this brownie point system works, but you both deserve a lot of them.

Darinw,
I really don't know how this system works, but I would grade MadMax "A" and give him the points for answering my question with a successful procedure that solved the problem.

If I need to do anything else, please let me know.

Also, I guess I don't have enough points to ask any more questions and don't know how to get more...
