HP 3200-pc cannot find scanner

after nine months of flawless use, my 3200C won't scan.  my pc "cannot find scanner."  HP helpline was no help.  They told me to go to my bios and switch to EPP port, which I did.  No difference.  I have also been told a new program may be interfering with the scanner, but I have installed no new programs for a month.  I have also tried the unplugging thing as described on the hp scanner help page, no luck.  Here's all my info-Compaq presario 4508 running windows 95, running a parallel port to my 3200C.  My printer is an hp 694C,so I don't think there are any interference problems with that.  Help!  P.S.  please answer in layman's terms, I'm no Bill Gates.

ISSUE: An error dialog box appears with the following message when you try to run HP PrecisionScan LT: "Cannot find your scanner. You may have a scanner connected to your PC, but PrecisionScan LT was unable to locate it. Do you want to run HP PrecisionScan LT without a scanner attached to your PC?"

SOLUTION 1: Shut down the computer. Cycle the power on the scanner by unplugging the power cord. After 10 seconds reconnect the power cable. Then start the computer and try running HP PrecisionScan LT again.

A connectivity patch is available, which may resolve the issue. Click here to download the Connection Patch for Windows 95/98 (sj325me.exe).

SOLUTION 2: If Solution 1 and the Connectivity Patch did not resolve the issue, the scanner may not be responding due to a conflict with an attached printer. Further information is available regarding connection with printers below:

SUMMARY: This error may occur when the HP ScanJet 3200C scanner has a conflict with an attached printer or has been left in an unstable state. This can happen if PrecisionScan LT was abnormally terminated (for example, if the user pressed CTRL + ALT + DEL while scanning, or if the computer ran out of memory while scanning, or if the system crashed). Rebooting the computer does not typically fix the problem.

if the above did not work  try this

Uninstall the scanner (if you have norton anti virus go into it and disable auto protect mode) then reboot once you are back into windows hit ctrl,alt,delete and end task everything except for explorer and systray then reinstall the scanner

1. go into the bios and check the parallel port mode you want to have it set to ECP mode.

2. While in BIOS turn off power management

3. Make sure scanner is connected directly to the pc no switchboxes and that you are using the cable that came with the scanner

4. Your printer may be interferring with the scanner

go to start settings printers right click on the printer select properties go to the details tab and then click on spool settings then select to disable bi-directional support and to print directly to the printer the format should be RAW try again if the scanner still does not work then you will need to uninstall the printer and all of its software then uninstall the scanner (if you have norton anti virus you will need to go into it and then turn auto protect mode off) once you have done that then reboot once in windows hit ctrl,alt,delete and end task everything except for explorer and systray then reinstall.

5. Make sure the scanner is plugged direct to the wall do not run it through a powerstrip it may limit the amount of the power the scanner requires thereby making the bi-directional communication weak and it loses communication

6. IF all of this fails yet your printer can work fine off of the parallel port, and through the scanner (then i doubt you have a bad cable you could try another cable) otherwise if you have never had any previous scanners on the system or tape backup drives then there is a problem with the scanner most likely. IF you have had any previous scanners or tape backup drives please list them... furthermore if there are any fax programs or any devices you have installed recently please list them.

tried everything you said.  no luck.  apparently the scanner is shot.  this is my second hp scanner to fail in less than a year.  never again!

OK, I've had a similar problem with the 3200.  It would help to know the specifics of what program you are attempting to send scanned pictures to, but here goes.  You need to uninstall everything pertaining to the scanner.  It will help to go into safe mode to make sure that you get it all.  Go to my computer, right click, then properties.  Choose device manager, then scanners or imaging devices.  Is yours there?  If so remove it.  Reboot to windows.

Now.  You need to install the scanner, but do so through control panel.  Start, settings, control panel, then choose scanners or imaging devices.  Is yours listed? (shouldn't be) Click on add, and follow the wizard to install the scanner.  If you come across missing files, find them with start find, files and folders.  I had to search for hp3200c.dll, and hp3200c.inf.  One of them was in windows/system, and one was on the CD.


Install the HP Scanning software, and you should be good to go.  If it doesn't work at this point, make sure the scanner is still listed on control panel and if not add it again.

Hope that works.

One other note is that you should make sure that your LPT ports are enabled in device manager and in the bios.  I had a customer who got a game once that messed this up.  Don't remember what game though.  sorry.
