What is your operating system? You said you've installed the software 3 times, does this mean you've installed the CD-writer drivers or the software that comes with the CD-writer?

Windows 98, both the drivers and the sofware.

In your system properties, device manage, under CD-ROM section, is there any cd-rom drive there? any yellow mark? And also check if you've installed the writer on the right cable. It should be on 2nd IDE cable, and if you have only 1 cd-rom drive, set the jumper at the back of the drive to primary.

If it's the USB version, try installing the software before plugging in the drive.
