My scanjet 5p makes a loud grinding noise every time.  The carrige tries to drive itself through the case.  No image is produced.  Has anyone else had this problem.  Is there a way to reset or realign the scanner?

Your scanner is defective.  There are no choices except service.  If you wish to pursue this with HP see this link to locate your service center - http://www.hp.com/cposupport/mail_support.html, they will have some options for you.

Before calling them, make sure you engage the lock and unlock it just to be sure.
