Look at the waranty. Which ever company you decide expects it to last the life of its warranty. The company does not support it out of warranty so this is telling you something. As consumer demands have directed manufacturer to produce quicker, better, smarter and cheaper, quality has suffered.

Motta1000 you would be lucky if any printer scanner or multifuntional device lasted past 12 - 18 months this is when most scanners, and other devices fail...
3 years you will most likely not get out of any device unless you do not use it on a regular basis all of the scanners and other items today are built to fail definately within 3 years of purchasing the unit. warranty is partly an indicator but some companies that have 6 months to a year worth of warranty the units are going to constantly fail and have to be returned ones that have the shorter warranties may fail within 90 days but usually a letter of compliant complaining to the office store or requestiing to speak to a manger at the company gets that resolved.

The best advice i can give to you is to go to zdnet.com and look up scanner reviews also review the companies service and support rankings various magazines publish this such as windows magazine pc computing and so forth then make your purchasing decision from that point also check on the net for problems check the companies website for faq's they have posted those are good indicator of how problematic a product may be.
