Sound dead

I have a power macintosh for 3 years
now.  Recently, the sound completely
died...nothing new was installed or downloaded, it just died, not even a startup chime.  I checked the sound control panel, all was set on high, zapped the pram, didn't help.  I even reformatted my drive and reinstalled the OS (8.5)...still no sound, although everything else is perfect.  I believe it is a hardware problem but that's out of my area of expertise.  Any ideas?

If you dont get sound when you plug in external speakers or headphones then your sound controller has gone bad. If you DO get sound with external speakers/headphones then either the internal speaker has either died or has a bad connection. Any mac service center will be able to fix it or if youre feeling adventurous you can open the case, find the speaker and check the two wires connecting it (usually black and red twisted) for places where they could be disconnected. No breaks? Take it to a service center and ask them to replace the speaker.
