front page not saving changes-error 13

I have had a nightmare having to reformat my hard drive and reload everything. ALL seems fine except for my front page express and front page 98. Since I have reloaded them-they are not working right. It is the latest version of front page express. When I make a change on a page and want to save it gives me an error message 13. Will not save anything. Any ideas? I have uninstalled and reinstalled them both and even tried only keeping one at a time but still the problem persists! It is fine if I make a new page from scratch, but I need to make changes on current page!THANKS for ANY leads or help! I have had no luck posting elsewhere the past 3 days!
MANY THANKS For you time in reading this.

I assume you are trying to save to your local machine.  Make sure you have installed Personal Web Server or Peer Web Services (depending on your machine (9X or NT)) and make sure the service is running.  Sounds like you're trying to save to the local host.  If you are running NT check your hosts file and make sure there is an entry:

127.0.0.1     localhost

I may have this backwards:

localhost     127.0.0.1

At any rate, the space between them is a tab.  This "hosts" file is critical on an NT box.  Use the "Find" applet in the start menu to locate it.

Good Luck

A more temporary workaround would be to try this ...

Do as "Save As" on the file you need to save and just save it in a local manner.  Example:  In stead of saveing it as http://localhost/index.htm, save it as c:\Inetpub\wwwroot\index.htm.  It sounds like the problem you are having is publishing to front page extentions.

If you want to test this theory, I will make you a temporary account on my server and you can try publishing to it.  If it works, it your local extentions, if it doesn't, it's probably a setting in your client software.  My local time is: 7:18 am EST.  I have to go to work, so I won't be able to set this up until this afternoon.  aprox: 2:30 - 3:00 pm EST.  You may have found a solution by then.

Good Luck.

P.S.

I don't think the "hosts" file is important unless you have "wins" enabled.

I have created these pages with Front page express. Just installed Front page 98 to see if it would make things work, but I still get the same error. I have a folder on my C drive called PUBLIC, which contains all my webpages. When I open one up in Front Page and make changes and then try to SAVE it won't let me, that's when I get the error message. It does the same if I do SAVE AS - UNLESS I change the NAME of it. Then I can save it as a new file, I don't want to do that all the time and then have to reupload everything.
SOrry for being ignorant, but I am not experience with alot and only know what I have been doing so some of what you all said was confusing to me. Don't understand all the term. Once again thank you for your patience and help!

I wouldn't blame ignorance on your problem.  send an email to this addy: expert@fibdev.com and I'll set you up a temporary account on my server.  We'll see if you can save to my server without these problems.  That will help me narrow down the problem.

You are the best! I have searched for days and couldn't find anything specific for #13.. ok, 1 st screen pops up a yellow triangle with the "!" and JUST the number 13. Then a second box pops ups and says: "! An error occurred while attempting to write the file". Now, I DON"T think I downloaded any 'webserver program' as I use WFTP le to up load. But I don't think last time I ever installed that either. Besides, if it was a necessary component, wouldn't it have automatically 'chosen' it as a necessary component? And also, remember the odd thing is that it saves IF I RENAME the page something different! I just can't sort this one! THANKS AGAIN< hope I can return the favor somehow sometime!

Does this happen with all pages, or have you only been trying to save one.  The reason I ask is this:  I've run accross errors when saving a file with an included page within it.  Still looking ...

Sorry I am just getting back to you! OK, My system info 1st: Win 98/ PentII/233 128 ram laptop Sager 6600series. This error happens in BOTH Front page and front page express. I couldn't get the microsoft help to work with my serial number. Don't know why. I got a copy of it from a friend. I don't use it but tried it to see if I would get the same problem as I did with FPExpress. And I did. I have 3 websites,  A personal one a professional one and a k9cancer site I put up. Any of these pages that already exist on my hard drive I am unable to save changes too UNLESS I change the name of them and save as something else. THen it saves! I haven't tried to see if I can still then make changes over THOSE newly named pages. I figured I didn't need to make new ones, just update the old. Thanks for this! I am out for the day (anniversary for a friend) so won't get on till late tonight. I am currently in NYC area so that is eastern standard time). Have a good day! Finger's crossed!!! (So glad you like a challenge!) I am going of the deep end! Hugs

I just got in, after party, went to a hugh Barnes and Noble, when through all the Front page books. NOTHING LISTED in ANY for error 13! I am just wondering if I should try to load more components like the web server and see if that makes any difference. I don't thinkit should as I never used them before. But what the heck! Just don't know where to down load them from, unless I uninstall internet explorer again. Which maybe I should try and load ALL components of it. Will keep you posted if that works-

Tres,

I've heard back from microsoft and this is what they say:

Let me ask you a few questions so that I will be able to troubleshoot this
issue for you correctly.
Gabe, are you talking about files that exited before you formatted your hard
drive or files created after formatting the drive or both?
Once you have resaved the file in a new name, does that permanently resolve the
issue or do you go through the issue each time you attempt to save the file?

SYMPTOMS
========

When you try to save a Hypertext MarkupLanguage (HTML) file in Microsoft
FrontPage Express, you may receive the following error message:

13

If you then click OK, you may receive the following error message:

An error occurred while attempting to write the file.

CAUSE
=====

This problem can occur if you try to save a file that is marked with the
Read-Only attribute.

RESOLUTION
==========

To work around this problem, save the file with a different name. To do so,
use
the following steps:

1. Start FrontPage Express, navigate to the Web page you want to save, and
then
click Save As on the File menu.

2. If you want to save the file to a Web site, type the name of the file in
the
Page Title box, type the page location in the Page Location box, and then
click OK. If you want to save the file locally, click As File, type the
name
of the file in the File Name box, and then click Save.

II
Please send me the following information from your system. To do this, let's
use the following steps:

1. Click on Start, then Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and finally
System Information.
2. When System Information opens, let's click on File and select Export.
3. A "Save As" window will appear.
4. Click the down-arrow next to the "Save In" box and select "Desktop".
5. In the "File Name" box, type your case number. Now click Save.
6. This will begin the Export process. This is exporting the information
from System Information into a TXT (text) file that will be placed on the
Windows 98desktop.
7. Attach the file (<CASE_NUMBER>.TXT) to this case as a supplement.

If you prefer to view the information before sending it to us, simply open that
file with the Notepad program or word processing program capable of reading
text (TXT) files.

=====================================

Send me the text file and I'll pass it on if you need more help.

:)
