W2000 boot problems

I was experimenting with some device driver samples. After installation, my system can't boot.

I tried choosing safe mode to try disable the driver.

But even then, a screen dump appears soon after the w2000 splash screen. ie. I never get to boot into w2000 safe mode proper to go into control panel.

The screen dump simply tells me some device driver could have caused the problem (and is indeed so) and that I should go into safe mode to disable it.

Problem is I can't get into safe mode.

Anyway to get out the mess?

Safe mode boots Win2000 using the minimal set of device drivers and services so that it can run regardless of what you've installed.

It sounds like you perhaps replaced a Win2000 standard service or driver with your own while you were messing around with it?

You should boot using the Win2000 installation/boot floppy and use the Recovery option.  Hopefully you have a Win2000 Repair Disk and can restore your system.

One tip that is really helpful with working on this kind of thing on NT/2000 is to have a double installation of the OS on your hard drive.  Then you can always boot the backup copy and fix your problems without having to rely on the original copy for anything.

Worst case here is that you'll need to run a Win2000 reinstall.
