Windows98 upgrade 5100c

Upgraded computer to windows98. Software for ScanJet 5100c would not load. Downloaded win98 software form HP site. Error message indicates another application is using scanner. All applications have been closed. Same result.

Be sure that stimon (Still Image Monitor) and hpsjvxd (HPSCANMonitor) are running in the background.  If they are not, you can extract the files - stimon.exe and hpsjvxd.exe - by going to Start|Programs|Accessories|System Tools and then select System Information.  Under the Tools menu, select the System File Checker. Place a dot in Extract a single file and follow the prompts.  For this activity you will need the Windows 98 CD-ROM.

If the scanner is being accessed by another application means that the unit need to be repluged and played. I would go into the Device Manager through Start, Setting, Control Panel and then double click on the Systems Icon. This will bring the Systems Properties. In the Device Manager check to see if you have an Imaging Deivce logged but sometimes it will be logged under Other Devices. The scanner may be listed twice as the Hp 5100c or Hp 5190c. Remove both of these and then reboot the computer so it can plug and play the scanner. It may ask you for your Win98 cd to extract a couple of files. Hope this helps ;)

Anybody able to solve these types of problems for  unskilled computer users gets max score. I really don't understand this point system . If you got to many points reduce to some lower number.

Thanks.
