i want to create a chat prog but as far as i can gather from info read and code i've seen i need to know the other persons ip address..
how can i get someones ip address across the net just by using there e-mail address....

You can't tell the person's IP address just by using their email address... There is no correlatation...

In order to write a chat program(TCP/IP) you need a socket control or use Winsock API. If you use the Winsock control that comes with the VB4/5/6, once the client is connected just read the controls RemoteIP property. Using API it would be almost the same(Structure member) Idea. BUT email address, that's totaly a different animal.
