I am relatively new to CF and have researched this situation in ASP but am curious how CF handles it.  What should I be looking at, where can I read more and is there a best practice when the client has turned off cookies yet I use session variables throught my application.

Session variables are not reliant on cookies being turned on.  They are a server side thing.  Client variables on the other had do require cookies.  If you have CF Server installed you could check the docs at this address.

http://localhost/cfdocs/Developing_Web_Applications_with_ColdFusion/12_Using_the_Application_Framework/dwa12_10.htm

If you don't have it installed I could send you that pages text if you wish.
[does that break any agreements with Allaire?]

Sorry it took so long to get these points back to you.  The documentation reference you sent does not really answer the question in a straight fashion...or more to the point, to my satisfaction, but I was late getting this response back because of my contract job hunting, so for right now, CF is on the back burner.  Thank you for your response.
