look at http://www.codeguru.com for this sort of thing.

also , try CDialogBar .. this puts a dialog into a dockable/floatable window.  The dialog can include a tree control (say).

Look at http://www.codejock.com/ for a full implementation of DevStudio like docking windows, encapsulated in an MFC Extension Lib.
