>we have just networked two computers at work, and now we are wondering , can both people use the internet.

Yes, but before i add information i will need to know what operating system is on both machines.

Overall, you will need to install software on your wifes computer thats designed to share your access and then install software on your machine to find the sharing software on a network.

The easiest to configure and a good program i have found and used is Sygate.
It can be found at:
www.sygate.com

>also what is NetBUI, where can we find it on the hard drive, or is it something that has to be loaded ??

nebeui is a protocol or way of each computer talking to each other.
Its designed to work in small groups only and will not work for the internet.

I would suggest installing for your home network tcp/ip. This can be used for both your home network and internet.

You only need one protocol so use one that does everything, tcp/ip.

Its harder to setup but i can help you with more detail once i know your operating system.

Sygate has a small tutorial to help you.

To install netbeui, right click the network icon and select properties.

Then add protocol, microsoft, netbeui.

It copies files from the win98 cdrom and then you reboot.

If you have win 98 SE, there is a way to enable internet connection without any extra software but its not all that easy to setup and is not as reliable as a product like sygate that in addition to sharing the internet, adds features to protect your machines from hackers by installing whats known as a firewall.

If you d/load the evaluation version of Sygate, you have the chance of seeing if it provides what you need.

Prior to installing any sharing software, you need to install tcp/ip protocol on your network.

This protocol needs numbers added so here's the steps.

On each machine install tcp/ip protocol in the same way as i described netbeui adding.

When the machine reboots, r/click netowrking, properties and look for tcp/ip protocol thats attached itself to the name of your local network adapter.

Modify the properties so you specify a network address.

use these numbers:
for the machine that has the modem.
192.168.0.1

the other machine will be.
192.168.0.2

In each case the "subnet mask" will be:
255.255.255.0

Thats all you will have to do.

After that, you can install sygate with the modem machine as a server and the other as a client.

Although the installation is easy, there maybe some questions due to the extra features in the program.

Here's a link one of the sygate help pages:

personally i think that you wouldnt really need to worry about hackers as long as you arent hosting any pages and dont bind sharing to tcp/ip.. but i may be wrong.

to get 98 SE's sharing you go to settings --> control panel--> add/remove programs --> windows setup --> higlight internet explorer and choose details, next check the box for internet connection sharing wizard.. hit okay and the program will start up, have a disk handy because its going to need to make one to configure your other computer..

when its asks to restart choose yes, now take the disk and go to your wifes computer you will need to run the setup file from here after it configures everything go through the readme file and follow the steps.. you can follow a graphical walkthrough at http://www.wown.com/j_helmig/icshost.htmIt may help more than the readme file.. good luck with the network.
