We purchased 4 Scanjet 5100 and 3 of them have quit working with the same problem.  It goes through the scan and as the scanner returns to normal position, it makes a horrible loud grinding noise and does not scan properly.  Two were replaced under warranty, the 3rd is not under warranty.  Anyone know how to fix this?  I tried messing with the lock, but it did not help.

Hey driscooli..........mate hey to be a horrible bloke and bring you bad news but you have a bad hardware problem there and will have to get HP to look at the scanner as the Caridge will need replacing in each unit. This porblems has been know to happen and the only way to fix it is repair. Sorry Mate.
